Hello guys, was wondering if someone can help me.

i bought a cheap irish plate on the 20th december from r4v.co.uk

plate was £39 plus the £80 transfer fee. great, nice cheap plate hide the age of the car.

Now i hadnt received anything back @ the end of january, i accept it takes upto 28 working days to process documents, but its been 28 working days today since the application was sent from r4v to the DVLA (apparently.)

i sent this email to them this morning;

Dear Sir or Madam,

Under instruction from yourselves, I was told to contact you after 28 working days of not receiving my documentation. You confirmed received the paperwork 28 working days ago. Please can you advise me on the whereabous of my numberplate documentation

Regards.

To which i received this reply;

Dear Sir

The delivery date of your order is governed by your contract of sale and the DVLA, please kindly refer to these as they govern the delivery of your order and nothing else does.

The guidelines they give is purely that, as clearly stated on the V317 application form and can be more or less dependent upon their processing workloads.

Your contract of sale clearly had the terms below that you accepted in order to place the order:

Buying
5. Under the terms of the contract, the transfer of any registration must be completed within a maximum of one hundred and eighty calendar days from receipt at R4V's office, of completed documents and payment from buyer and seller. The buyer would be entitled to a refund thereafter if this is not fulfilled. This transfer period may be superseded by any written agreement between the Buyer or Seller and the Administration Manager. This transfer period may also be extended should the DVLA office processing the paperwork require to inspect any vehicle involved in the process as this will negate the maximum term.

The paperwork is with the DVLA processing centre and they will issue it to you this week as we have advised already.

Regards

So i phoned the DVLA, who informed me that the numberplate is still registered to a moped in ireland as of today and that no application has been made by anyone to transfer the plate off or onto another vehicle,

I phoned R4v to confront them about this , who told me the DVLA are wrong (?!) and not to worry i will have the paperwork this week and to give them another ring next week if i still havent received anything :tumbleweed:

so in their buying stipulation , its 180 days (i.e. 6 months) before i can get a refund. Have to say im pretty annoyed, not at the money, but the principal and the way they've written their emails with no apology or any reassurance.

Not heard of this company so did a bit of searching. It seems they also run a company called reg4vehicles.co.uk. I think you may have a problem.
HERE is one article I found

I Know, i did some research after i hadn't received anything for a while which worried me a bit :(

Thing is, Wilksy bought a plate with no problem in a timely fashion, so i guess i am just unlucky

What a nightmare, I don't like the tone of their email response either - very aggressive and dismissive of your situation. You never know, the paperwork may still be going through. Guess its a waiting game now :(

It may be that they no longer have the contact details of the owner of the plate on file and are trying to contact him by other means.

I've seen my plates advertised with Agencies with whom I've not placed it. They basically see it with one agency and advertise it at a markup on the basis that they will then contact the primary agency and hope to do a deal.

If in my situation I sell the vehicle (and plate) and still remember to inform the agency with which I placed it, it often means the secondary agency continues advertising it unaware that the original agency has removed it, or the owners have changed.

I went to buy a plate 15 years back and although it was advertised, the agency admitted upfront that they were no longer able to contact the owner, before taking my money. (This is why its always wise to put a lower offer in, not pay full price, as they need to contact the owner to see if they will accept a lower amount first. The agency will rarely take the hit out of their commission and pay the seller the full amount they wanted !)

Now, if an agency can sit on your money legally under a contract for 180 days before refunding it, I'm sure there are plenty of dishonest business men out there who are happy to do so, especially when talkingi it in the £1,000's. It's an interest free loan for them !

Ask the agency if you can select another plate instead, rather than wait 180 days, if they wont refund it ?

Cheers guys

Marlon, glad I'm not the only one who found the tone of the email rather poor.

Number5 yeah I'm aware of the usual score about you buying a plate when they haven't actually got ownership of it, however their email states that they've already sent off the paperwork to the DVLA and that the DVLA are now processing the paperwork for the plate... Which is not the case as of today it's still registered to the moped, I'd expect for the plate to at least be shown on retention by now?

Did you pay on Creditcard? If so contact your card company and get your money back that way if the supplier won't play ball. The fact the plate is still on a vehicle should help you in that regard.

Probably no help to your particular cause J but they must be committing some sort of fraud by taking money ( the transfer fee & any VAT ) that are actually for the government ?
Real pi$$er & a lesson for any others to use a credit card with any similar dealings

Steve no I paid via debit card I don't own a credit card :(

Andy I know I would have thought the same. Guess I have just play the waiting game :(

Are regs that cheap to buy, that in itself would send out alarm bells, the devious in me would think cheap plates to hook the punters in and hope for 40 quid or so the customer won't bother chasing it up, just smells of too good to be true.

Tim.

Just looked back through my Internet banking and I realise my mate paid for this with his credit card! As he bought my old private plate he said he would pay on his card for this possible eventuality so I hopefully should get a charge back with any luck :D
