Private plate ownership

Sorry didnt explain myself clearly but it seems the law is different on our side of the water, we cant just buy an english plate and register it to our NI car. The way to get around it is to register the english plate on a mainland registered car first, then transfer to the NI registered car.

By unregistered plates I meant new plates from the DVA or DVLNI which have not yet been registered to a car. If you buy an english reg say second-hand off anyone on the mainland or even someone who has an english reg here in NI, you just have to pay the one transfer fee. You with me?

Still not getting it.....I know that in Eire it was always the case that a new car buyer had to register the vehicle themselves (unlike here where the dealer has to do it) so you often saw cars out in the sticks on the road for a year or more with no plates, so they could on-sell it as next years model LOL...does that happen in NI? Crux of it is there isn't such a thing in mainland UK as an 'unregistered plate' per se....they are all in one of four categories; (i) on a vehicle thats currently taxed and MOT'd, (ii) on a vehicle that isn't, (iii) held by someone on a retention certificate, or (iv) held by the DVLA - the latter could be anything from regs that were never issued to ones that reverted to the DVLA when a vehicle was scrapped, or even a plate thats been taken away from someone because of misuse, e.g. persistent illegal fonts or spacing....

Neither can I see the law is any different in NI surely? So you can't buy a dateless plate from the DVLA - say ABC 123 - and put that on your car?

I'll probably get hammered for this given how many of you have them, but I've never seen the point of personalised or 'vanity' plates. Whenever i see one I just think "they're trying to disguise how old their car is". They are also ridiculously expensive as well. It's just another government stealth tax.

Each to their own though, it wouldn't do if we all liked the same thing.

OK so unregistered I meant owned by DVLA/NI.

We are like you and unlike the ROI you stated above.

What you can not do here is buy a plate from the DVLA and stick it straight on a NI registered car, it has to go on a mainland GB car first and then the NI car unlike you who I have now learnt you can buy straight from DVLNI and stick it on your mainland GB vehicle.
