Private plate on a new car

When you buy a car can you / the trader send your retention certificate off with the change of keeper V5 section?

I've always waited for the V5 to come back before sending it straight back with the plate change instruction.

The dealer can yes. I have always given the dealer my retention certificate prior to picking up the car with my personal plate.

It went a bit wrong with the Porsche as DVLA could not deal with the space in my surname for some reason this time, so the dealer could not allocate the certificate to the car as there was a mismatch in name.

As pvr said dealer can sort it out. Just make sure you allow plenty of time. The dvla seem to have complicated their procedures as much as possible and sacked all the people who knew how to follow them :x

That's the worry, I've had paperwork go missing there recently.

Luckily they were able to print me another copy but it was a hassle.

I've had my car a year and one week today, as it was a unintended purchase I hadn't taken my plate off my car so arranged it all via the dealer. Picked the car up on the Saturday, all paperwork sent on the Monday and by he Friday the plate had been removed from my car and by the following Wednesday my plate was transferred to my new car.

When they closed the local offices it caused major headaches but it's been swift since the backlog was cleared. Can't comment on how long it will take come March and September when the new registrations are released but I've not heard of any issues recently apart from PVRs fiasco.

Just a pain the it can't be done same day anymore, it's a right faff especially when your insurance charge admin for changing the plate.

Ah yes, Admiral charged me for that as well. The Porsche dealer paid that for me.

Not sure what the difference is between now and the previous occasions.

They can be persuaded to bypass their admin charge. Persistence is key here, and they 'will wave it this time only'.

True, but I insured the car on my private plate which did not happen, so changed it to standard plate and then 3 weeks later to private again. Two changes, they only waived one.

Usually when you change car with Admiral if the plate stays the same but the car changes, no charge but change the plate and there is. All rather strange. But I was the same as PVR.

If the DVLA had processed both transactions at the same time for me then I wouldn't of had to insure the car under the plate assigned to it by the DVLA when registered because I had the 7days free insurance from bmw but as it took a further 3 working days I had to insure under one reg with no charge and then when my plate was changed I had to pay to have it changed on the documents.

im with allianz and they allow to change your plate as many times as you like without any admin charge...... ive been with admiral before and they can be buggers!
