Private Number Plates

Good find JayT! Wonder why they don't do all the numbers? I can't get 83 :headbang:

Are you going with any flag / border or just going to keep it plain?

I can't decide how to get mine, I like the clean look but a blue border on the left with EU flag actually makes the plate look smaller and a 'A11 AAA' reg will fit better...

Not really sure what the options are... think i'll prob just keep it plain though. My Zed's sterling grey with the red interior so dont really want any coloured borders unless its black or grey.

I am thinking of getting a cheap one and wondered how it worked if you sold your car privately before buying- do you pay £100 to put it on retention then another £80 to put it on your next car?

When you sell...

- Go to DVLA office, ask to put plate on retention. Fee £105 (£80 for retention, £25 for next car admin). V5 sent off
- When the V5 for your car comes back, it now has the old number (though might be a different one depending on age)
- Go to the DVLA with your new car's V5 and the retention certificate - nothing to pay (£25 paid earlier). V5 sent off
- V5 eventually comes back with the new number

You can buy plates after step three even without the V5, as they give you a certificate telling plate maker you are allowed. That or just stick the plates you carried over from the last three cars like I do on :). Theoretically you should do all this before you start to sell so you have the V5 with the old number again to give the new buyer. However as all the above is paper based and takes an age, twice now I have managed to a deal with the buyer

I've got S11URV with a screw in between the 11. My mates call me Shurv as my surname is Shurvinton, so it was a great plate to get. Unfortunately for me it's been on my wife's cars since I bought it 11 years ago and I haven't had the heart to grab it back ....YET........ I've got a simple dateless 3 letter 3 number one on the Z at the mo, which will stay on for the time being until I feel I want or can be bothered to swap them over. I'm more likely to be pulled than her for an illegal plate as she is a very sensible driver, whereas me.............. :driving:

I've got "B19GS C" on retention my names Chris Biggs, will put it on the Z4 soon only had car 2 weeks,

Previous car was a 911 with the Reg PR55CHE.

Pity it wasn't a turbo-nutter-barge, as you could have had PT55CHH :D

I was looking for something that could make my username, initials, car, etc. But having an 'I' in my initials doesn't help (ACI, TCI or TONY) and you can't have 'Z' in front anyway (to make ZZ04MMM.

The best I could come up with were...

Depreciation proof assumes there will be a buyer willing to pay what you did for yours AND there are no significant changes to the registration mark system.

How do we know reg plates won't be scrapped for some form of advanced barcode reading system or signal transmittor sending make / model / driver to police systems in 10 years time?

When I was buying mine the other bidder was a number plate trader who was quite happy to pay 9K and would be intending to sell it on at a profit. But yes at the end of the day it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay.

As for changing the registration system, well the government could do that at any time just like anything else they control. Look at how much money people lost on their 4x4s when the government fiddled with the road tax system.

Oh and if you guys can't find the plate you're after, if it's available you can request the DVLA to put it in the next auction.

I'm considering buying a plate starting V8 or V10 with my initials on it, my thinking being that if I can afford an M3,5 or M6 in the next few years then this would be a cool plate to have. But would it look stupid on a Z4M with a straight six, or am I getting too anal when in fact no-one will really give a shiny shite? :D

I bought JD54 MES (for James and JD, my initials), but not fitted them yet... I really need to stay in one place for a week!

I would have preferred JA07 MES, but all the JAXX MES's are being auctioned instead...

As I live in a well known northern town I have R44BOK, just hope Adidas dont kill the name off for good.

Bought it for £250 9 years ago and had it on all my cars.

First MX5 had R2 MXV MR2 had T10P MR first Boxster had S 80XA S Mk3 MX5 had MC07 MAZ (MC my initials) 2nd and 3rd Boxster had M 80XA S (with a little Y next to the M My van has K 40 MGC (40th birthday pres) and my first Z4 has M1 8MW E (with a little 85 after the the E
I hate to say it ! BEAT THAT FOR WASTING MONEY !!!!!!!!!

I have S2 XVE but have not yet put it on my car.

MI5 BOS belongs to my cars previous owner as paperwork has not yet come through.
(Don't think she's the boss of MI 5 though!!)

Also have DCZ 4280 for sale but have no idea to it's value or where I could sell it.

i would stay clear of that type of plate because it could only be used on certain vehicles, my plates will be with me for ever and a day, not car specific at all

Can't see the point of spending hundreds of pounds on a personalised reg with anything to do with a car on it... After all the badges say BMW, Z4 or whatever six inches away from the plate and are free.
Anyone who knows about cars and is likely to appreciate what is on the plate already knows the make and model, and if they don't know that much about cars they probably don't give a flying f**k.
What's the point of then having to sell it with the car for peanuts, or try and sell it privately, 'cos M3 on a mondeo just suggests to me that person is not as well off as he used to be.
A personalized plate, ought to be just that. personal, not vehiculised. but thats just my view :fuelfire:
