Private Number Plates

Lucy - Be careful on the mis spacing. These days they can not only pull you and issue a fine (upt to £1,000), but confiscate the plate without recompense. I would however expect the first time you'd get a 7 day warning to fix it.

OK - DVLA regs on smaller platesfor normal UK cars (not to be confused with non EU type approved smaller plates that have excemptions)

Very clear in this PDF:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf

So long as there is 11mm at the top, bottom and side margins it's fully complaint (of course observing the correct spacing, font size, etc.) but we are only concerned in this tread about cut down plates.

i got stopped a few weeks back in my old car, basically if the plate was say ab12 abc, the gap between the 2 and a was too small by a couple of mm, also letters were a couple of mm to short. i admitted i knew it was illegal, and that i had proper plates at home, i was told to change them now and they will let it go.

only reason i was stopped was because i put my foot down a bit on a wet night, so the copper followed me. cant blame them they are only doing their job. also he didnt notice it didnt have the name / postcode of the place that made the plates, which also made them illegal.

i find if you are honest with the police they will let you off on very minor things, either that or the coppers who stop me are into the man love lol

Thing is of course the plate gave him the excuse to pull you, not the minor wet road fun. From that I'm sure he'd be hoping for a little drink or drugs pull, but let you off.

The number palte screws may just go into the backing plate, depends on if a muppet just used long screws. More important is the backing, which can be fastened on with any combination of centre of 4 corners screws or bolts.

Any residual holes could be easily fixed by a smart repair company. I had mine fixed as a part of changing the front end.

Thanks jeeper, fingers crossed - will try taking a look tomorrow.

Thanks I think I got a bargain as it must be a £9,000 plate, someone owned it and a company was selling it on their behalf for £5000. After some haggling by my dad he got it for £2500. I'm well chuffed

If it's of any interest to you the DVLA sold your plate at auction for £2400 + vat + auction fees back in November 96. I not sure about £9000 but it certainly worth £5000+.

I've got 31JW on mine, I did try to buy another one at the DVLA auction last month (the one where they sold 1HRH and 1O) but got outbid, I'm gonna have another go at the auction in march.

$25

You can search the DVLA auction website and find out the prices of all the previous sales.

http://www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk/home/en/Auction/

If you click on the previous prices achieved section and then search for EP it will bring up a list, the prices shown need ~25% adding to them for VAT and auction fees.

I'm very pleased with mine and plan to get another soon but JW ones are not cheap (31JW cost me £9200) I'd be happy to pay 9k for 21JW let alone 2.5k.
Here's mine

mmm, at that price it must be an investment, coz am sure I'd rather spend another £9200 and buy a much better car than have a fancy plate.

If you spend £10k on a plate would you ever lose money on it when you came to sell, 10 yrs down the line??

I think a depreciation proof asset is perhaps a better description, plus it's probably safer than leaving the money in the bank at the moment
A friend of mine has been collecting private plates for years, and as long as they are well chosen they always seem to go up in value.

Depreciation proof assumes there will be a buyer willing to pay what you did for yours AND there are no significant changes to the registration mark system.

How do we know reg plates won't be scrapped for some form of advanced barcode reading system or signal transmittor sending make / model / driver to police systems in 10 years time?

I am thinking of getting a cheap one and wondered how it worked if you sold your car privately before buying- do you pay £100 to put it on retention then another £80 to put it on your next car? Not that I could part with my Zed but you never know

DVLA site wasn't clear about this, thanks for any help!

I just bought Y77 JKT from the DVLA on saturday. Y77 is for the year i was born and JKT are my initials. Only paid £400 for it... bargain I think :)

Cant wait to get it into my Z that I also bought on saturday.

Good find JayT! Wonder why they don't do all the numbers? I can't get 83 :headbang:

Are you going with any flag / border or just going to keep it plain?

I can't decide how to get mine, I like the clean look but a blue border on the left with EU flag actually makes the plate look smaller and a 'A11 AAA' reg will fit better...
