Private Number Plates

Thanks I think I got a bargain as it must be a £9,000 plate, someone owned it and a company was selling it on their behalf for £5000. After some haggling by my dad he got it for £2500. I'm well chuffed

Short plates like that are worth a fortune...in your case it's a good buy (worth far more than you paid!) but I could never spend that on a bit of plastic. Mine was a 21st birthday present and was a cheapie, but it's been on 5 cars so far and a new motor doesn't feel like mine until it goes on....

Thats a cool pic mike, yeah I have had the other plate for a while certainly gives the car a nice look and feeling to own. It is alot of money but its a lifetime thing and at that price i had to snap it up :D

Will have to take a closer look as to whether it can be cut down, unlikely as the screws are top corners, so presume they go through into the front "bumper".

Yes but a private plate will last a lot longer than a holiday and may also increase in value!

All you get for a holiday is some photos and maybe a video that nobody (including you) will ever want to watch again! :P

I don't know what you are smoking but it's good s**t. :P

The number palte screws may just go into the backing plate, depends on if a muppet just used long screws. More important is the backing, which can be fastened on with any combination of centre of 4 corners screws or bolts.

Any residual holes could be easily fixed by a smart repair company. I had mine fixed as a part of changing the front end.

Yes cut downs are perfectly legal. Go to the DVLA site, but in essence if the spacing and font are legal you only have to have a certain anount of border top and ends. It's less than an inch ends and I have left top and bottom standard.

IMHO it make the front look a lot cleaner. (Seems my car and reg were posted already on a previous page)

It's a very grey area though. I know a guy who had a US shape plate (square ones like you would find on the back of a 4x4) on a Golf and he was pulled by the cops for it and given a fix it ticket on the basis only Japanese imports / 4x4s could have them? I've also known people with cut down plates to get grief, though technically they obey the rules. Can't find a picture but has anyone seen those plates which just have a 5mm border around each letter, so it's as if each letter is cut out of a normal plate? Those are 'lega' too but they are trying to ban them I think

id like to get a private plate but just cant get a combo i like, and im not willing to pay crazy money either. ive just had a play on the dvla site and found something i like, but as its a new style plate using 11 its not available untill dec 2010 - bugger! will just have to wait

Totally agree re wrong shaped plates (US, etc.) and that's not what I have done. It is very clearly defined on the DVLA site the fonts, sizes and measuments. Trimming off the ends is 100% legal. This evening I'll pul the link and post it.

Thanks Lucy  but being a guy you can imagine its not that great. You should definately take the plunge and get the F1 UCY mind you it will look its trying to spell something ''FIUCY'' unless you space it out. Why not just get something with your initials.

Nice plate Tommo :)

I don't have a middle initial, i'm just LB :( It would be so much easier if i did, then i could get the typical letter-number-3 letters. And i don't fancy spending as much as i paid for my car on one

Definitley fancying the F1 UCY though, but i'd get it spaced out as F 1UCY. Illegal i know but i've got away with allsorts ;) And if i got pulled for it 2 or 3 times i'd just have another one made legally.

I remember seeing a picture of a car with the plate X321ARO which spelt ORAL SEX when viewed in a mirror and it got me thinking...

I've had my plate for about 6 years and it makes me smile everytime I see it's reflection in a shop or shiny bumper on the car in front..! Oh the little things in life :D

hmm, just looking at this

which mirrored gives

my first initial is m for mark, and polly is a nickname/shortened version of my surname. as per my earlier post i have an idea for a 2010 "11" reg but cant buy it till dec 2010, and no idea of the price dvla will put on it, where as the mirror one above is £490.

is it worth it, i do fancy a plate, just not sure about the whole mirroring thing

Of course you'll get away with it unless your pulled by a female officer :P

Unfortunately, fluttering my eyelashes when I got pulled obviously didn't work as I got a £30/£60 fine :( (can't remember which)

I think being in the wrong lane at the roundabout and nipping in front of the traffic on the exit may have given him a slight excuse to pull me over
