Here's a real life story of the prison system (not a news article from the Daily Mail, or headline grabbing journalists).....
I know someone who killed a 35 year old mother and critically injured her two daughters. The girls were 10 and 12 at the time. One spent four months in hospital and has life-changing injuries, the other spent a month in hospital but recovered.
The perpetrator was not very happy with his lot, apparently, so decided he was going to kill himself. He chose to do this by getting hammered and driving his van along the A16 and heading for other motorists.
Unfortunately the mother and her two daughters were in the wrong place at the wrong time, so he ploughed into them in his 2.5 tonne van. The driver of the van was unhurt.
The Police charged him with manslaughter, drink driving, dangerous driving and undue car and attention (they tried their best to get him charged with the most TBF). They can't get a murder charge in a 'car accident' no matter what.
The CPS threw out the manslaughter charge (as it was too difficult to prove) and changed it to 'death by dangerous driving'.
He pled guilty and received nine years, the highest term for 'death by dangerous driving', apparently. He was sent to Peterborough Prison, which is five miles from where he lives, so received visits on a very regular basis from his family.
He was released after just over 4 years and in those four years he got counselling, help with his 'mental welfare', help with alcohol addition, workshops to help him when he was released, etc, etc.
The husband and family he ripped apart would have got a bit of counselling and probably a bit of money for the daughter's ongoing physical care for a few months.
