Can anybody explain the 2nd hand ZED market at the moment?
Why are the prices SO high?

Do you think they will drop in a month or so once summer is done and dusted?

I seriously cannot find anything decently speced for anything less than 20k and thats on an 06

Remember then to argue this point back about finding a replacement for yours, it needs to match the value.

What Andy says, and then consider getting an old banger till winter when prices drop and get more for your money.

Hummm - I was actually talking this over with a mate today during lunch

When i bought my car, we were more in recession than we are now so i got a cracking deal and used prices were lower than today.
I paid £16250 for my car back then and so insured it for the same amount.
Today i actually cant find one that matches the same spec - but the closest i can find it comming in at 18k (apples for apples). The one that does match is a 3.0si and is going for almost 21k

Do they think the insurance company will entertain such discussion? I like making a point - but only when its valid - if you get me!

srhutch - do you know what, i may consider doing this as it makes decent sense!

What about extended warranty i just took out? Do you think i have ground for a refund?

I think prices dived too low as a reaction to entering the recession. Will I lose my job? - best not be buying a sports car, etc....
They have certainly risen over the last few months as people have settled themselves.

Sure they may drop a little as we hit Autumn, but don't count on it. I believe modern well insulated softops don't suffer as they used to years ago.

Refund yes, as long as no claim was made I think looking at my X5 docs. And only for whole months left.

I had the same thing when my ST was writted off back in november last year, the insurance took so long faffign about over liability that i didnt get a settlement until march this year, the first valuation they offered was way low and obliviously rejected, i backed this up by printing off adverts from autotrader etc of cars with a similar spec and age to what mine was ad told them that i wouldnt accept an offer lower that what i could buy another one for, after another daft offer they gave in and i was only about 200 quid out of pocket on the value.
took that money and bought my coupe, happy days.

They still haven't accepted liability officially yet but the lad who crashed into me is in court in a few weeks time charged with careless driving so hopefully once that is out of the way they will put an end to all this stupidity, not a quick process, as my crash was in november and its now september the following year.

I suspect that the higher price of the new model Z4 is one of the factors that has helped to drive up the value of the second hand market for the 1st generation models.

id agree prices have firmed up a bit now we are not so deep in do do economy wise. im the same in that i declared the value of the car as the same as what i paid. i doubt i could buy a similar car for the money, but could get close. maybe when my insurance is due in march i should declare the market value rather than the value i paid ?

Agreed, the supply of "old" model is drying up as no new ones come in the second hand market, and the new model has silly prices.

I wonder if the insurance companies really pay that much attention to the declared value? Perhaps when it comes to a claim they can use it as a wriggle out figure.

Many these days seem to simply cover to a ceiling. Both my Z4 and X5 under Tesco are of no declered value but a £30k blanket figure each.

Interesting - did you get more or less than the value it was insured for?

Certainly panic selling caused te prices to drop suddenly, then with new Z4 prices seems to be high and not many used in the market, people are looking at the old Z4- which is good. Not sure what is going to happen leading upto Xmas.

IMO becuase lack of decent rivals.....

A4 Conv = boring, not sports car

TT conv = new one prob more expensive, plus bit girly image still

Boxster S = higher running costs, great cars though

S2000 = not same league on many levels, esp space and quality

Can't think of any others really. Z4 is a grea package, looks good, sporty, reliable.

The insurer will pay out current market value. They'll low ball the 1st offer 4 sure so stick for a higher price.

Was in my local dealer yesterday, granted I have a decent relationship with them, but whilst I was haveing a nosey I saw a silver 2.0 z4 March 08 exactly same spec as mine for £19,890 :o .

I paid 2 grand less than that back in April, so I asked the salesman and it seems as has been said above they cant get enough of the "old" model. He then tried to tempt me to px for a 3 series coupe and was willing to give me £16,995 for mine, which I could have no doubt pushed him on bearing in mind his eagerness to have mine.

No intention of changing but is worth bearing in mind.
