Does anybody know how much oem front calipers should be? Im looking at buying from a bmw specialist, just wanted a rough idea before he quotes me, cheers

Cheers peddy I didnt know about that website, are all prices in dollars? Thanks for the offer on the calipers but im gonna go with a new set, ive looked into buying 2nd hand or refurbed but decided against it.

Cheers Gannet, Ive just had a look on that website and for one front caliper it came out at £359. That cant be right can it, well I bloody hope it isnt. Although I couldnt find the caliper as a whole unit and had to put the housing and carrier in as seperate parts then add the cost together.

Sounds about right... that's why we tend to go for ones from breakers and then refurb them - BMW sell a kit. I you want new I'd have a look at a BBK from someone like KSport.

Bit confused now, just heard back from the garage and hes told me £126 for new caliper including fitting????

Just noticed you went to an indi, they'll be Pagid, or similar, rather than OEM.

Indi's tend to source from somewhere like http://www.eurocarparts.com unless you specify OEM. Ask them and I bet they confirm that. That said, Pagid have a good reputation so I wouldn't rule them out - just check what the warranty is. At that price, they're a good shout IMO.

Thanks for the feedback
I took it to a bmw specialist so just assumed they would use oem, do you know if its ok having one side oem and the other being an aftermarket caliper?

Not entirely sure, but I suspect if they weren't I'd be expecting the indi to be trying to sell you two straight away - replacing in pairs / sets is a common cry from most garages. The piston should be the same size, the pad and disk certainly will be and they are running off the same master cylinder, they may even be made under license to BMW. You should be fine but I would ask the indi to confirm this.

I'd ask the question and have some time to consider it - if only because someone may well be along with better information :?

Always worth getting pricing from:

www.motormec.co.uk and

gsfcarpart.com

found them both competitive in the recent past on BMW items.

That makes sense, thanks for the help :)

What's wrong with 2nd hand? especially when you can have it for £65 (for both)? :D
Half of its for peace of mind and the other because I needed one straight away. Ive actually had it replaced late this afternoon so im back on the road again now :driving:
Why have you got a full set of brakes for sale? Did you upgrade them or somethin?

Nice work Jimmy Gee, what did the indi say about the compatibility? Obviously they are, but did they elaborate?

Interestingly the Pagid 3.0si calipers are about £105 a side. I'd have been tempted to pay the premium for new.

Well the bloke used to run the local bmw dealership until he was turfed out by another company so he set up on his own. He told me he knows all the manufacturers that supply bmw so he just buys directly from them and sells for half the price that bmw would charge. As for compatibility, he said it will make no difference whatsoever mainly because you still have the same forces acting on each piston and as long as the pistons are the same size etc. its fine.

That'll be why I suggested elsewhere getting a 'siezed' piston extracted and cleaned by an indy......good as new. It happens to all calipers, especially when not used frequently.

But still a bloody choker! :(
