Price of next-gen Z4...

With regard to the pricing of the next-gen, is it going to have a substantial price increase in the US if it will be made in Europe instead, what with the strength of the dollar, etc?

I wonder how much it will be here in the UK? The folding hard top will no doubt add a few £ to the price, a reasonably specced 3.0TT could be close to £40k, that's a lot, especially if the residuals don't hold up.

Hmmm.

Oh, and has anyone placed a deposit or letter of intent with their dealer for one yet, to get first on the list?

A lot of the speculation will have to wait on the debut. Is it going to be a Z2, Z4, or Z...? If it is a Z4, then figure the price to be around 50K, and that is a guestimate based on previous pricing, and ongoing sales of the 335i.

Just a guess.. :idunno:

I had heard ( or read.... can't remember!) that the Z4 will increase in spec (ie: folding hard roof) and price considerably as there will be no entry level models with smaller engines.

They will then slot in the smaller engined Z2 priced and specced lower than the exisiting car, to give an entry level machine.

I have no idea how accurate this is, I just posted on info I heard. :D

£50k... wow where did you hear that?

I think he means $50k (US). Actually, I am guessing that it will end up more like $60k (esp. if the dollar continues to stay soft) :-(

Rumor is that BMW is retreating up-market witht he Z4(6?) and leaving the entry market to the Z2 (if it is even still in the works). Hopefuly I am completely wrong, but it is no secret that the current Z4 just has not sold as well as BMW needs it to, so I suspect they will be trying a different strategy with the next generation.

He means USD....Currently it's £24k-£46k for the UK car, if its moving up market and a Z2 will drop in below it, I'd expect ait to go up quite a bit. The M3 moved up market and went from £41k for the basic car to £50k plus options. It's all speculation though, will have to wait and see what BMW do

Good point ... I can remember when the M3 was considered to be a truly affordable way to break into a high performance auto. Now, as you say, it has gone upscale and lost any pretence of being an exceptional performance “value”.

BTW, the new M3 starts at $56, 500 here. Sounds like at £50,000 you are still paying a premium vs. the US price. I find this surprising given the current value of the dollar.

They said that about the current Z4 too, no smaller engines, then they brought out the 2.2, then they self-registered hundreds of 2.0 too

The dollar won't really affect the price here unless it's a US import, and even then only if you import it yourself. Prices of US imports either go up or stay the same, never go down, irrespective of the strength of our respective currencies.

The M3 hasn't sold exceptionally well here, you'd have dropped about £10k on one if you bought one of the first and kept it until now.

I get that, what I meant was that if you are paying £50,000, I was surprised that the price was not higher in the US given the current exchange rate.

I think that they keep the price lower in the US because they won't sell any cars otherwise, is the price about right compared to other models?

In the UK, although it's expensive at £50k, it's the same as it peers ie. Audi RS4, Merc C63, quite a bit cheaper than the base 997 or R8. And they made sat nav standard here too.

It's actually quite a bit less. For example, the RS4 starts out at $67,000. Audi has always impressed me as being way overpriced here, whereas BMW has always impressed me as being a much better value for a comparable vehicle.

There is also a lot of competition here from rice burning imports. For example, cars like the Lexus GS460 start out in the low $50k range. While I would not compare this directly to an M3 or an RS4, they end up putting downward pressure on the market.

Yup we get screwed. You pay about £29,000 for a new M3.

Grrrrr.
