Preview Evening

I washed my Z4 after dinner, and ready for the big day tomorrow. Salesman from local dealer phoned me just before 18:00 to confirm if I will go. :)

That seems to be the whole point. Going after the SLK instead of going after the Boxter!! BMW didn't think this one out at all!!

Yes, they did. Going after the Boxster is a mug's game - reviewers write the conclusion to such comparos before they even drive the competition. You won't beat the Boxster in a comparison unless you build a mid-engine car to take the battle to them, so BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are out. Lotus' proposed Evora cabrio would be the best bet in a face-off, if it sees production.

Given the lay of the field, BMW was smart to take on the cars they already beat in other sectors.

I have just returned from the showroom. The new Z4's boot is less practical than old model's. The floor is not flat. You cannot really fit a proper suitcase if you want the roof down. Even with the roof up, a normal suitcase will be just enough to fit in.

Local dealer only has one Deep Sea Blue 35i with multi-spoke wheels in the showroom, and it is not available for test drive until Monday. Salesman said no discount can be given to customers. If new car is ordered now, they can give you the 5-year servicing and BMW Driver Day. I think after 6 month, BMW have to offer discount and attractive finance deal to get people buying the new Z4. No current Z4 owners will rush to buy.

So you see what I meant about the boot being less than ideal given our current cars?

Sounds like your dealer is doing the same as mine - no drives until Monday. Our dealer car is just a sdrive 23i on the 17 inch turbine wheels. Looks nice in the grey paint and red seats though :D

I don't know how you can take things out from the boot without closing the roof first in the new Z4. Even a standard size archive box may be too tall to fit it in. I still like the new car, but I can buy a 325i M Sport Coupe for less and better mpg, and much better boot space.

Isn't the new Z4's boot/trunk space bigger than the M roadsters though? It may even be bigger than the M Coupes!
One of the reasons the M was no good for me, the boot space. The new one looks no better compared to my Coupe!

Top up it's bigger than the M roadster trunk space.
Top down it's smaller. It's longer (deeper), but narrower.

And what is new in the new Z4, you now have more space for storage between seats. The bulkhead is more vertical than the previous Z4 and thusly some free space is liberated behind the seats.

Well I just saw the Zed in the flesh this afternoon (will put my thoughts down on the right thread later.

I was staggered jhow poor the boot is. Open it and pretty big then you realise that if you plan to lower the top you have to pull down the rigid luggage cover to contain it. Best described as one of those hinged lids on the bigger BBQ's. What's left underneath is useless. A couple of squashy bags and that's it. The rest is just huge voids at the sides and centre to allow the roof to fit in - horrid
