Its evident on very small taps on the accelerator. Car seems to be running fine, but the sound was not there when i first had it. Could it be the cold weather maybe?

It can be heard coming into the cabin also. At first it thought it was something to do with the sound generator (rattle maybe?) but i highly doubt it. As it seems to be coming from under the casing ontop of the cylinders.

Navscreen motor broken, creaky suspension, Grinding noises under the bonnet. BMW will be very busy with my car!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang:

Try unplug the DISA when the engine is running...

Mine made what you might call a grinding kinda noise during operation from the top-manifold area.

Mr Whippy, did you ever get rid of this noise? I belive i have the same issue only when my rmps go above 2200 ish.... I thought it was my valves needing adjusting but now im not sure...

I replaced my DISA and the sound I had did go away.

It was fairly feint inside to be honest, but under the bonnet it was really quite noticeable and loud.

I think they can start sounding pretty bad. The best simple test is to just unplug it, and if the car gets a lot quieter under the bonnet, then it's probably a worn DISA. My new one is quiet as a mouse both plugged in and unplugged, as was my friends Z4's DISA unit.

All that said, it might not be the DISA in the OP's case, but it's a very easy 10s check to do when the bonnet is up, if you are trying to hunt down weird noises :)

Thanks Dave, exactly the cause of the tapping noise on mine.

i would say the noise is similar to that of worn tappets/lifters but the sound was defo coming from the wrong area.

any idea of the cost from BMW?

Ry

Mine was about £115 from BMW.

Not cheap, but if you search back for the thread with my DISA movement gif's, my 'door' on the DISA was a bit wobbly, and the pump was making a terrible racket vs a good one (which operates totally silently)...
My new DISA was solid on the door, and the pump was totally quiet. The transition at 4000rpm is also better too, you can really hear the noise step change now while before it wasn't really as noticeable.

Either way, I replaced mine because it made the engine sound, like you say, like the head had nails in it rattling around, and I've heard a few stories of parts of the door coming off and going down the intake runners, so all said and done I thought best to replace it. Prevention is better than the cure afterall :)

Hey guys, just seen this thread popup..

My original post was sorted by the dealership. It turned out to be a loose bolt.... They still tried to fleece me for £130 though as i thought it was engine related. :!:

I did notice today that the car is making a very very sligth rattle on low acceleration. I'm putting it down to the cold temps, i left the car outside for the first time last night instead of parking it in the garage.
