Hi everybody, i'm new the forum and would really appreciate your thoughts. I'm upgrading from a 118d m sport to the z4 2.0si sport conv, and have got a deal organised through local bmw dealer, for a pre registered 58 reg with 100 miles, titanium silver with red and black leather. Also has heated seats, star spoke 108 alloys. Price is £18500. Main concern is going from the 118d, very economical and had engine remap which put to 180 break, and nearly 290lb per ft tque so was extremely good pulling all the way through the gears. How is it living with the 2.0. Is it punchy enough on the tight roads, and plenty of pull on the motorway. Also, what are peoples thoughts in regards to depreciation with the new shape coming soon. Look forward to your advice.

Well you may not like my answer, but IMHO the worst possible buy right now would be a pre registered, 2.0, especially as you are already concerned about performance.
Clearly it's the run out with the new model due in days in the showroom. As soon as you drive it off the forecourt it's a 1 year old car and nothing wrong with a 2.0, but it is the smallest engine made and so in a few years is likely to be less sought after than the larger engined models. The 2 is sprightly enough but lacks the grunt of and smoothness of the sixes.
Personally I'd take my £18k and find a cracking top of the range 1 to 2 year old 2.5 or 3.0 model assuming tax and insurance are not major concerns.

Welcome! As a comparison back in January i paid £18850 for my March 08 3.0si Sport with 230 miles on the clock, from new it would have cost nearly £38k. So personally i would want a bit more off than that.
I think resale values should hold up ok for the time being, its when some of the new shape Z4s start appearing on the used forecourts in a year or so that the values of the current version will fall more quickly.

Would agree with CJ ans suggest either the 2.5si or 3.0si giving 218 and 260bhp. I get around 32mpg from my 2.5si compared to 39 from my old 320cd M Sport (E46) so not to bad considering.
Also you cant beat the sound of a BMW 6 cylinder
When I was looking 2 years ago my only no no was the 2.0i I think you will find a lot of others with the same view, but it depends on how long you want to keep it for for resale purposes, if this isnt an issue then go for it, just make sure you give it a good test drive first.

Hi richs100 - Welcome to the forum 
As an owner of a 2.0 sport for the last 12 months I thought I'd offer my 2 cents..
The 2.0 sport is a really great car - fells nice and light in the corners and has great balance. 12 months ago I paid more than that for an 18 month old example.... but today IMHO £18500 is way off the mark.
In the current climate with £18500 in your pocket and if you can afford the running costs (and that might be a big consideration - it's nice to go to sleep knowing that your covered by a long warranty) I'd go for the 3.0.
If you can stretch another couple of grand (and you don't mind killing the occassional polar bear
) then what the hell... Go for a nice and tidy M , you've only got 1 shot at life so you might as well enjoy it :evil:

I just sold my 120d sport which was remapped to 205bhp and went to my 3.0i Z4 and to be honest the 120d would wipe the floor with my z4 ok on paper the z4 is quicker but low down grunt out of corners on the 120d is awesome and would also go off the clock on a test track of course :wink: saying all that i would still keep my zed fantastic looks,great sound 6 cyl ,all round fantastic car and not bad on fuel i'm getting 36mpg mostly 70ish mway driving and a quick blast around the lanes

Sounds like i either need to get much more of a discount on the 2.0, although to be fair, they have offered me a very good part ex price on the 118d, and the cost to change is minimal, working out an extra £40 per month on loan, or to consider a year old 2.5/3.0. The only problem is the general running costs of the bigger engine, and with 95% of my driving being city centre, i fear the mpg would be a stinger, especially as I have a heavy right foot. I've previously had a focus St and struggled to get any more than 21 mpg, and was at the petrol station every other day so don't really want to be going back to the old days! I think if i can get it down to £17500, then I would be delighted with the 2.0. I have got one for the evening tonight so will be able know better as to if the 2.0 is going to have enough oomph by the morning. Once again, many thanks for your thoughts and hopefully i'll be a fully subscribed member of the zed 4 club pretty soon.

Although I didn't come from a 1-series diesel, my previous car was still a quick diesel (an Ibiza Cupra TDI with 160ps) and at first my 3.0i prefacelift (i.e. 230ps) felt "slower". But it's deceptive - the Z4 just lacks the turbo "kick" and in reality is bloody quick. I'd strongly recommend at least a facelift 2.5si or 3.0si, or even an older, prefacelift 3.0i, instead of a 2.0i, purely for the soundtrack
Where I was getting 44mpg in my Seat, I'm averaging 31mpg in my Z4 for the same driving - not too bad IMO. But again depends on your mileage circumstances.

If its mostly town driving it will be doing, and you want to save on fuel costs then the 2.0 seems the logical choice
In January I bought a pre-registered (December 08) 2.0 Sport with 11 miles on the clock for just under £17K. I figured it was a good buy for a car whose list price was just over £27K. I'm not too bothered about depreciation as I'm intending to keep it a while, but I am pleased with the relatively cheap, fun motoring that it offers.
