pre/post lights question

Well, an incident at the weekend saw a fella crash into me. Just a small knock about 5 miles an hour. Not much damage just a cracked bumper and a smashed headlight. All his fault so going through insurance.

Now the problem, i have fitted clear indicator headlights by swapping out the internals from my pre facelift lights (they're xenons). The garage will be picking up the car this week for repairs and im not sure they can just put a post facelift light straight on. Obviously the car will look strange with one ginger headlight and one clear so what do i do??

Oh and another thing, even though it was not my fault i think i still have to pay the excess, is that right? Doesnt seem fair :(

umm I think you can order a pre-facelift headlight with clear lenses - 2005 model IIRC. lucky you don't have angel eyes :poke:

My insurance company only charges me an excess if i'm at fault - might want to check your policy on that one

You don't pay excess unless the other person refuses to accept liability.

But if the 3rd party accept fault then it goes via thier insurance so you don't pay anything... But sadly still have to declare it when you renew and have your premium gets bumped up.

As for the lights... Hotride is correct there were 2005 lights which were clear... No idea if they came in xenon form or if they will match your butcher side (seem to recall a post with someone who had replaced a factory clear with another after an accident and the new lights looks slightly different) just something to bear in mind... May want them to swap out both to match.

Sorry to hear that mate. It will be down to your insurance policy, but I can see that you would have to pay the excess. I never have when I've been hit. Is it clear cut the other guys fault? Maybe the insurance company are just covering their bases until blame is officially assigned.

Hotride, is right, there are pre-facelift lights with clear lenses - I think some on here have done that to upgrade, worth a search. Although not sure if they were xenons. Either way I'd research the part numbers myself to make sure the repair centre use the correct ones.

ADD: Or to put it another way, what aquazi said :P

yep , definately the other guys fault. I had a call from Admiral (im with elephant) and they said there would be no case on my policy just on his. but im still not sure if i have to pay the £250 to the the garage when i pick up my car from the repairers.

OK i'll carry on searching to see if there are pre facelift clear xenons. Otherwise im not sure what to do if there arent. I doubt i could ask the insurance to pay out for two headlights.

You will have to pay the xs when you collect, it is recovered from the other insurers as part of the claim and paid back to you.

Make sure you keep receipts for any incidental expenses as a result of accident, phone calls, train tickets, taxis to car body shop etc as these are all recoverable. Don't go mad as they can challenge it and may ultimately not pay.

Get him by uninsured driver and you are likely to pay the xs but never get it back unless you sue for it.

hmmm thanks vvroom. I'll look into how to claim it back from them. I know Elephant and Admiral are under the same umbrella so hopefully wont be difficult to sort out.

So, there is defo a pre facelift silver CLEAR xenon headlamp available???

I know the repair garage will just quote the chassis number to BMW and order an amber unit. I already KNOW this will get unncessarily complicated

If you have informed your insurance company of the mod surely there is some obligation on there part to fit to correct part within reason.
I know when i disclosed my mods the rough proviso was they would replace the mods as long as they did not cost more than the OEM part.
Just thought I'm with Admiral aswell.
Which reminds i have yet to disclose my latest activitys.

Yes, but you'll need to check the difference, there are two sets listed for the amber lights also?...

For vehicles with
Xenon Light
and
White direction indicator lights
01 Left bi-xenon headlight, chrome 1 01/2006 63127165717
01 Right bi-xenon headlight, chrome 1 01/2006 63127165718
01 Bi-xenon headlight, left 1 01/2006 63127165711
01 Bi-xenon headlight, right 1 01/2006 63127165712

From: RealOEM E85 Z4 3.0i - Headlight

I saw that PS but wasnt sure which would be right. So an 01/2006 is the model you would specify. Got it. Maybe i'll have to ring BMW to confirm.

I would go hasstle the spare parts guy at my local dealership if it was me. But my local dealership is about 600meters from my house lol. Pass it on the way to work every day.

I'm sure they could find the part no. For a pre-facelift clear xenon, I mean surely they sold cars with xenon headlights in that year, so they should be able to find the part no. for them, and the sooner you tell your repairer what you want the more likely you will get what you want...

As vvrooomm says your insurer will claim the uninsured loss ie the excess back from the party at fault under the subrogation clause of your policy.

I had a similar incident when the guy behind me decided to save the wear on his break pads and stop with my rear bumper. I was insured with elephant at the time (I've moved to direct line and saved a few hundred quid) and I didn't have to pay the xs

You normally have to pay out the xs to the car body shop as insurance company do not pay them that part of repair bill. It will be returned to you several months if not years later when claim finally settled.

Took almost 18 months to get mine back as two insurers were in dispute over costs. Good job I never accepted an offer of like for like courtesy car. They offered 645i with a rental charge of around £500 per day, I was without my M3 for nearly 8 weeks - the car hire alone would have been more than value of car at the time without the 12k repair bill!!
