Pre MOT advice

Hi all

My E86 is due it’s test soon and as far as im aware there are no known faults at all but as it’s an older higher mileage car you never know so I’m wondering if anyone has an tips or advice to help me prepare the car please?
Thanks in advance for your reply

Check the history for any advisories from previous years that may not have been addressed.
Good look round, make sure all the lights work, tyres are legal, washer bottle is full and jets hit the screen right.

Not sure if it works, but I always fill up with Shell V power and 1/2 a bottle of Redex to aid with passing emissions

At the very least, make sure it's had a good long run, enough to 'clear the pipes' get rid of any condensation etc.

^A good 'Italian tune-up' is always a good idea before an MOT. Give the brakes a couple of hard stops too.

Give it a good clean, on top and underneath. Give the wheel arches a good clean and brush off all the crud. MOT testers hate a filthy car and it just shouts “not looked after”.

Good luck.

All good advice there; I always use V power anyway but the 'Italian tune-up" roasting the 'cat' before the test seems to be the big factor and my print-outs show some incredibly low figures.

Yes clean the underside, but don't make the mistake I did once, putting a light dusting of ACF50 on the shocks, springs and brake pipes to keep them nice and got an advisory for having a "film of oil on shocks and pipes"

Find a nice place for the mot that you trust and ask them to do a pre mot check.

This. theres a indy porsche garage i use, and not only do they do a pre mot check, they have a good relationship with the mot tester so while they will verbally tell you all the advisories, they wont be listed on the MOT, it'll be a clean pass with no advisories, cos thats what we all want to see with our older cars.

Sounds good, personally I don’t mind that sort of stuff being on the docs, it just shows that you get it fixed when it’s not there next time or you have a receipt showing whatever it was. Then again my z is a 2004 car with 120k on it it’s worth crap all anyway so I don’t really care what the mot says so long as it gets me through the year. I do tend to fix stuff tho
