Pre-ignition

I've been suffering a bit from pre ignition when pulling away to such an extent that it is going into the dealer for a check. Most noticeable at cold and as I drive 90% of the time with the top down I can always hear it. Most of my driving is relatively local so I use the nearby Shell garage to fill up but recently had to use Esso and suddenly it was much improved, not totally cured but much better. Am I imaging things or is there some possible logic in this?

Seems inconceivable without a major DME fault or associated sensor issue..

The DME and sensors on that engine are so sophisticated seems implausible.

Sure it’s not a rattling heat shield? Pinking is almost impossible on a modern car with knock sensors and if one of those had failed you’d get a light on or at least a code stored. Have you read the codes?

Seconded about maybe a rattle of some kind as it’s really unlikely to be pinking. There would be error messages up as well check engine light.

Let us know what dealer finds though.

Potentially whilst a different issue this could link to a PuMA I just learned about that is a DME fault.

Well my car was reported as nothing showed up...... I've asked for a call back from the service manager as it hasn't gone away at all. Now I drive with the top down 98% of the time I can hear 'pinking' under load until the engine really warms up.
