PRE FACELIFT XENON HEADLIGHT CONFUSION

 Wondering if you guys can help me here. I have just fitted pre facelift xenon headlights to my Z4; ie has a xenon lamp & a haolgen lamp installed in them not your Bi-xenon units. I was under the impression that the halogen bulb was ONLY used for a 'flash to pass' function and the xenon was used for dip beam & main/full beam which was differentiated by a flap that covers half the xenon lamp when in dipped beam and vice versa.

My headlights fitted however seem to only work with xenon in dipped beam and halogen comes on permanantly in main/full beam but no difference to the light intensity of the xenon; ie no flap seems to move to give more light. So to round off I basically have xenon light same intensity & halogen light when in full/main beam.

I have fitted the auto leveller sensors, washers are all plugged up etc but I still have my old LCM module fitted so wondering if this is maybe the cause. Or I have been completly misinformed from all the confusing contradictions on other websites and this is exactly how the lights function on a pre facelift Z4. Can anyone enlighten me on this? What is the true functionality of these headlights?

This I believe is your problem - you'll need to get your existing LCM coded or get a new xenon one, which you would only really get if you had fitted the auto levelling sensors, not sure if you did this?

Just fitted auto levelling sensors today after finding out my car already had existing wiring loom for the sensors. Accidentally found a wire tucked away while fitting new brake pads so car is 'legally' setup for xenons ie washers & auto levellers. I have the xenon LCM too so just a matter of connecting it when at dealer & getting it coded. Be interesting to see if it changes function of halogens & xenon...

Anyway besides the point, someone must have pre-facelift xenons fitted and be able to tell me what light does what :tumbleweed:

Pre facelift:
Dipped is the xenon only
Main is the xenon (shutter moves to remove cut off) plus halogen is on too
Flash to pass is the halogen only

Ok thanks for that. Maybe it is working ok & I'm just not seeing xenon operate to full beam, is hard to see it correctly without burning a hole in my retina!

Just checked and xenons definitely don't get any brighter on full beam so think I will just have to wait till I get new LCM coded. I noticed my indicators intermittently blink really fast too but stabilise some attempts. The lower voltage of the xenons is obviously causing havoc with the cars ECU.

Does anyone know if you need to do additional wiring to pre-facelift xenons if fitted in place of projector halogens for the shutter to operate Infront of the xenon light for full or dipped beam? :|

This was my wiring on my xenons before I installed facelift versions

PRE-FACELFT WIRING

1. RAIN SENSOR
2. LOW BEAM
3. HIGH BEAM
4. SIDE LIGHT
5. HAZARD
6. HAZARD
7. INDICATOR
8. BI XENON

8 is to xenon shutter

Hi mate. Out of interest, which model is your zed, as I'm curious to know if the loom is standard fit on a pre-facelift 3.0i SE?
I've got the washers but manual beam adjusters.

Cheers.

Yes the wiring loom is fitted already on all pre-facelift 3.0 models. Here's the link that shows exactly how to fit sensors with decent pictures etc.

Took me about an hour to complete, 10 mins for front one & about 40 mins for rear as it was pretty fiddly trying to fit brackets for sensor but no hassle really. 10 mins taking wheels off & back on.
I had to take the protective surrounding off around inside of wheel arch to get at socket for front right side of car as it was tucked in behind it. Cable was tie-wrapped onto brake sensor cable so just follow this.
Hope that helps you.

Silly question coming up but I am still learning about the pre/post lift models.
Xenon lights is a must on my short options list so need to it confirmed.

Was Xenon lights ever an option on pre face lift cars?
