Pre-facelift rear lights - modified (with pics)

Just a small change to my rear lights. I wanted rid of the amber spots but am too tight to buy a set of clear spot rears . I liked the idea of all-red rear lights, i.e. colouring the amber and reverse spot in red, but wasn't keen to try this on my existing lights in case it went pear-shaped! I also like being different and not following the crowd so this seemed like an idea...

I acquired a spare set of OEM standard pre-facelift rears for £25. They came with red tint film covering the amber and reverse spot, but the film was far too thick to allow any hint of orange light to shine through - even using green bulbs made NO difference - so off it came. I then bought some E-tech red spray tint plus some clear gloss spray lacquer off ebay (£10.48 total) and did the following:

- masked off the inner sections (i.e. covered over the reflective part of the light containing the fog and reverse spots)
- prepped the surface with isopropryl alcohol
- sprayed 3 thin coats of red tint over the entire outer part of the lights (amber spot plus surrounding brake/tail light section)
- I trialled the light after each coat to check for amber shine through: all was good
- coats of tint were applied 10mins apart
- after final coat of tint I applied 2 thin coats of gloss lacquer, approx 15mins apart
- it dried to a smooth, glossy finish
- fitted my french fries from my original lights

Anyway, I'm happy with the results. It's not completely got rid of the orange (I'd need to use more coats of red tint to do that) but it's kept them legal enough - I hope) for safety and MOT. Yes they're not symmetrical, but I wanted to keep a functional reverse light - again for safety and practicality. Not bad for a <£35 project, with lots of tint and lacquer left over :)

I've done this write up as I know a few folk have thought about this idea but nobody seems to have posted up a "how to" or actual results of how well/poorly the tint worked on OEM amber lenses. Hope this helps someone else

P.S. Yes I know there's an ///M badge on the numberplate surround but f**k it, I couldn't find a decent quality surround without one (plus my black electrical tape I had covering the ///M bit fell off )

Nice, A11y, thanks

Did mine last year, they were too dark. Think I need to give them another go, when I get a sec - forgot to fit my remote roof module last weekend!

I think I might've got away with a 4th coat of tint to completely obscure the amber, but I didn't want to risk making them too dark! Perhaps worth trying with a layer more than me if you're brave and have some spare tint, etc.

I think yellow rear lights would be pushing it Richard! :o

Nice job M8
How did you get such a smooth shiney finish, I had to use a polishing machine to smooth out mine after tinting them and still don't look as shiney as yours :(

I remember seeing other folk's lights with what I'd call "orange peel" effect, where the surface of the finished lacquer was a bit uneven. I noticed as I was spraying the tint and the lacquer that if I put a bit more on at a time than I normally would, i.e. perhaps slightly thicker than I first thought was sensible, that it dried far smoother. Of course this runs the risk of runs in the tint/lacquer but luckily I got away with it! Also, I read online that layering up the coats quickly - before the previous coat completely dries - can produce better results.

I used exactly the same E-tech tint and Hycote lacquer from your "4 clear spot" guide Nosa

Good post,ally/makes me wish i had the time to get mine done,as i bought the e-tech spray back in jan,and the weathers been awful, then i got v busy work-wise :(

Great results,a nice alt to the clear spots

They look great. This post has got mr thinking about trying this again. I tried the film approach but failed. Could you explain the masking bit more please as I can't visualise it.

I just used masking tape to cover over the entire innermost section of the light inside of where the french fry goes, i.e. the bit that contains the foglight/reverse light. That way any difference in appearance between my tinted/lacquered bit (the outer part) and the original finished bit (inner part).

A couple of folk have asked me for the parts links...

Looking good a11y. I bought the driver's side Amber light with the clear fog that was on here a few weeks ago and have had red tint film over the ambers to see how I liked it before I sprayed it. Bought the red spray paint so will probably do it this weekend.

Hi guys,

I did mine yesterday using vinyl film and more than happy with the quality and the look of them - The indicator is yellowish, but enough? im not sure...

Have any of you gone through your MOT since doing this?

If you can wait a few days I'll let you know - the Z4 is booked for MOT this Saturday morning :D

thanks a11y,

PS I would stick your old lights in the boot, just incase
Modified my originals and sold them to another forum member

(shouldn't be an issue even if they fail as I've got several weeks to sort it out until the actual expiry date of my current MOT)
