Power steering

On starting car today, following a short run, power steering light came on and no power assistance . Turned engine off and back on again all normal light off and power steering working ok ..... any thoughts appreciated , car under warranty until Dec ... 2006 z4 manual coupe 20k miles.
 
Take it in to the dealer get them to look at any fault codes. Anything found should be covered by your warranty.
 
Exactly the same thing happened to me this morning,

10min drive to work.
Parked up, wanted to get closer to kerb so got right back in and started up.

Steering wheel with '!' icon lit up yellow and the wheel was barely turntable.

Turned engine off and started back up again, everything back to normal.

Am about to go out for a drive on my lunchtime to see if it occurs again or was a weird one-off.

Had it nearly 2weeks.
No probs at all.

07 roadster. 3.0si. 22kmiles.

Ok, just following up from today.

No repeat of the light etc. at lunch (10min drive & back after an hour) or this evening on my return home.

Hi ,I started this post a couple of months ago as my z4 did the same thing as yours . Since them all ok , took it to garage they checked fault codes found something but they said it was probably a one off [sometimes these things happen !] My main concern being the warranty expires 20/12/11 and I would have liked it sorted before then but nothing to go on. They suggest I renew warranty[at my cost] for a further 12 months to cover any eventuality not very good really.

Any clues to the cause of this fauly because i seem to have the same problem on my 2002 3.0 si roadster

Just curious as if this is related to the known issues with the high pressure hydraulic steering line. I know I just had mine replaced because it was leaking and was told this was a known issue.
 
just had my fault codes read, steering torque sensor fault. The fault is intermittent but means you need whole new upper steering column from BMW £1900 inc VAT just for the part. Good friend who i took the car too has a really good car electronics place, so is sure he can fix the sensor without replacing parts.

I tried replacing battery, and checking connections before to no avail, obviously. Had the codes cleared meanwhile just to see if it was a one off, as the fault came on when i full locked the wheel, maybe a bit harshly pulling out of a space.
