Power Steering

Traded in the old 2.0 lt Z4 and picked up the 2006 at the weekend. Got in the car and drove it to Norway ...... perfect.
Just when I got into town I noticed some shuddering/notchiness through the steering wheel when making full turns, its only when turning right, turning left is silky smooth.
I initially thought it would be low fluid, but then why only when turning the wheel to the right.

Right enough I haven't lifted the lid to look yet - just sitting in my hotel wondering if its a common problem or if any one has seen it before.
doesn't appear to be any leaks under the car .................

Never seen it before, or heard of any others with it.

It could be something as simple as a splash guard in the wheel arch comin loose and rubbing, or a dirty ball joint though.

Im pretty certain its in the power streering system, doesnt feel like its anything rubbing.
Will have to get the car up in the air when I get home whilst someone turns the wheel for me.

here's an interesting development ............ when you push the sport button, it goes away .............
its a phenonimuminumimuminum
not too worried cos the car came with 3 months warranty ...............

Sport button has absolutely NO bearing on the steering in the M. All it does is change the throttle map, nothing mechanical occurs - just flipping a metaphorical switch in the ECU.

Sounds like the steering column to me. My dad's X5 had a similar symptom when new, replacing the steering column fixed it in his case.

Well its defo a phenonimuminumimuminum......... its not going away, like I say,not too worried as I have a 3 month warranty.
Im thinking its a torque sensor kind of problem, everything is smooth and perfect when turning left, which rules out the pump -
it almost feels similar to when ABS kicks in ..... that kind of vibration -

I'd get it back to the dealer asap. Could it be a loose belt? Presume it has a belt? Seem to remember similar notchy feel to the power steering on my old 520i. turned out to be a loose belt.

well .............. it gets even weirder ............
like I mentioned, when I press "sport" ...... it goes away, and as playalistic mentined, its not even connected to the sport mode.
Been driving around in sport mode for a couple of days now - switched "sport" off ........ and its gone, steering is perfect.
Had a wee looksee under the lid, and the top of the fluid resevoir is defo in place, and the belt is tight .............

Think Ill just have a beer and pretend it never happened ............ :D :D

.....and you can bet it'll come back the day after your warranty runs-out. I'd report it to the Dealer, just so it's logged within the Warranty.
