Power steering relay?

Hey,

Does the Z4 E85 have a power steering relay? I'm presuming so, but I can't find my manual, if it does does anyone know where it is? Without the book I don't know which ones are in the engine bay or if it's elsewhere. Also does a sticky relay sound plausible? Moving off the power steering takes approx 45mins to operate, if I stop for fuel etc, it is off again for a short while before kicking in again. Now if I leave the car ticking over before going anywhere in the morning the steering kicks in after 45 mins without being turned. So I can't see how the column needs slightly turning, or indeed that there a problem with the column as when it kicks in it works normally leading me to think it's a voltage problem, i.e. sticking relay. I've put a new alternator and battery on, done a parasitic voltage drop test, reading was 1.6 Amps.

Any ideas?

Thanks chaps.

Yea....

Motor on the column and it has a torque sensor.

Usually that faults and gives a fault code up...Think its something like 611 or similar...

New motor then or can you put a sensor on?

Its not a seperate part and a whole column needs to be bought..

There are a couple of work arounds, but whether they last or not im not sure..

I've just bought a column from a BMW breakers in Sheffield Gaz, £400 nicker but with a guarantee I ain't complaining. They didn't have one in but sales guy asked his mate and he knew of one coming in next week, I stuck my moniker on it.

Cheers for the replies mate.

There are a few members who are going hydraulic John, Monkey Mat is one and I'm sure there's another member. I reckon that's going to be the way forward as the new electric rack route is pants down money :|

If it was a keeper I'd do it firebobby. Matt has offered to change it. This column is a 2nd hand unit so £400 as opposed to £2k..!!! A part of me wants to keep it the car, its a lot of fun but other things are drawing the eye.....

There is a company that will replace the torque sensor for £975 plus vat and guarantee the part for the life of the car. Ergen will convert to "normal" power steering for £2000. Hopefully the secondhand column will work. Mat is the best person to do this job for you.
