Power Steering Problems

I have a 2008 3.0si, 30K miles from new, and started having power steering problems. Typically after reversing, or manoeuvring on full lock, power steering fails, warning light comes on. Turning ignition on and off a few times solved problem (so far). Taken to independent BMW garage, and their diagnostics picked up the error code. This could mean a new steering column (ouch :!: very pricey). Had a s/w upgrade as first step, but problem has now returned.

Have other people had this problem with 2004-2008 models? This sounds identical to the symptoms that triggered the recall for pre-2004 cars. I thought it had been "solved" for later models?

Thanks.

The classic symptoms are usually people driving straight ahead find the power assist is not there, usually in hot weather or when the heater is running. I don't think the issue was ever "fixed" other than going to a completely different system for E89s. Perhaps early models were more prone, but no documented fix AFAIK. Some have had luck installing a zerk fitting and pumping grease into the gearbox.

Kind of sounds like a steering angle sensor issue, which is the only independently replaceable part, but what do I know?

yeah got the exactly the same issue on my 3.0 si. My problem tends to be worse in winter months. gonna try grease the bearing on top of the steering column behind steering wheel. bearing may be dry
