Power Steering/EPS Motor - Source & Coding Required?

Hi all, after some long running issues with the power steering in my E85 roadster, the EPS motor went back to ECU Testing and they have confirmed they are unable to repair it so I need to source a replacement.

Does anybody know where I can obtain a new motor (part no 0273010010) I don't mind refurbished/used but some kind of warranty would be nice.

Also do they need to be coded to the car? And if so would it need to see a main dealer or could the kind of tools an independent mechanic would have be able to do that?

Thanks in advance.

The first time mine failed I bought a second hand one off a breaker who no longer breaks z4's. That lasted another 2-3 years before it also died. This time I got it done by EXCU testing and remanufactured the one I got second hand.

The first time it went to a local bmw indy and he managed to swap it over no issues. No idea about coding. All I would say is it can be done by a decent indy with all the right tools if need be. If you do buy a second hand one. It would be worthwhile just sending it to ECU testing and getting it remanufactured rather than have to go through all of this again.

Usually plenty available on ebay if you search for them

Thanks, it seems like they are not available new - or I can't find any at least! A search of the part number on eBay only brings up rebuild/repair services but I'll try getting in touch with some breakers to see if they have any available. Unfortunately ECU Testing don't stock any reconditioned units.

What about buying a column for the motor and then reselling the column ?

Im sure the breakers will have one. Try Quarry motors.

They are available new from dealer for circa £2500 last time i checked. it's the full column you get not just the module.

Yeah that's what I was saying you need to buy the full column and then remove the module and send it to ecu testing. Then get the new module fitted to your current column and keep this as a spare or sell it on.

I wouldn't bother just fitting the second hand module on straight away as that's what i did and it only lasted a couple of years before it also died.

I would say, it is a fairly common issue. my old 3.0 failed but fortunately ECU testing were able to fix it.

The other option is emailing some ebay sellers and ask if they would remove it from the column.

You could always send to ecutesting to re-solder but I think i would try it first and take my chances as you are looking at another £300

Thanks for the responses, I have sent a few enquiries to breakers and will see what they say, also thanks Lee I'll drop you a PM shortly.

I'm sure I read somewhere that when buying a whole column it is important that a specific pin is present to make sure things are aligned properly? Although to be honest I'd rather buy just the motor itself if available.

And yep I suppose whist it could be worth getting the second hand motor rebuilt by ECU testing, if it is working fine with no issues I'll probably take the gamble and get it fitted straight away and if it has issues in future then get it rebuilt when the time comes.

the part was recalled in america but not elsewhere (a complete cop out from bmw) it has a design flaw. it will happen againa nd again it might cause so much damage they deem it unrepairable. its your choice but there was only ever 2 major design flaws on this car and the power steering was one and the roof motor the other. with the disa valve probably being down the list as number 3.

it's not a matter of if it's a matter of when. there was a new column introduced in the facelift which means they don't suffer as badly as pre-facelift cars. if the car you are getting ti from is a pre-facelift you will be left without EPS at some point in the future.

The pin is a special bmw tool to lock the column in place. It's not necessary if you careful and keep it aligned. I wasn't suggesting you change the column, just remove the motor from it and use your existing column.
