Power over time

Following on from some queries as to the accuracy and repeatablility of dyno runs I spent the next rainy day charting the life and times of the developments on my N20 and N54 powered E89s.

So from 185 to 546 BHP on the same chassis..not to bad really...and 309 nm to 738nm..

Obviously two engines but only one design of chassis.

Lap time over time would be more interesting.

I’ll do a few graphs to encapsulate that..they are not going to make pretty reading…

So here are some grpahs to show how handling mods and power affect perceived behaviour in certain conditions.

The track versions are works of fiction as I've not tracked the cars, but criteria for track use are diferent to road use.

The road use has been verifed over 7 tears and 50k+ miles though on Scotland's best test tracks..

Don’t get me wrong, I admire your commitment, but it’s seems you’ve spent about a gazzilion pounds making a powerful car very powerful but only a smidge better than a much less powerful car that only cost half a gazzilion pounds to put together?….

Either that or your graph skills are awful :?

You are spot on …the former not the latter..my graphing skills are pretty good

It's been a long time since I had a car that I progressively modified to get better performance and handling but I remember getting quickly used to each step up and then hungering for more. Be interested to know if you experience the same Peter or have you reached a point where you're eady to settle?

I cut my teeth on the first Zed and then pushed the boat out on this one…the 35is has never had an issue with power, the issue is the weight, weight distribution and power are too much for the stock car, especially as they age.

I was fortunate in that my driving skills and the relatively unique driving style of the E89 (and maybe E85) were allowed to develop as the power on the N20 moved forward..that car after the runflats were removed never felt that bad, unlike the 35is w where it’s taken a lot to get it feeling good..although the power has risen a great deal it’s the chassis improvements that have finally got it under control..

It’s too earlier given the 150 BHP leap in power to say that I will need more…but I think given that it’s just getting impossible to loose the full power in many situations that I’ve arrived.

A bit more finishing on the audio and paint plus some final transmission mods and a little bit more tuning and it’s there..

Time then just to use it and maintain it.

And on to the next project … :tumbleweed:

Alright. I recognise you don't track these cars but have extensive experience behind the wheel. I know you know if performance goes up or down. But for the oodles of money you've spent, I wish there was an objective way to measure performance, other than the dyno. Hence the track. Or a stretch of a desert road you know well, and without doing anything stupid, time yourself.

In the borders of Scotland?

There are lots of “deserted” roads

I do understand what marcoose is suggesting tho., a lap time is the only true way to evaluate.

You sold the Zed but still trolling here ? I feel for you. More on the latter than the former.

Never trolled anywhere, sunshine. If I cared what you think I could possibly be upset by the above. I don't, so I'm not!

Last time I looked you were calling Peter a clown. You kissed and made up? :!:

The problem is you need a track with wide run off areas and the ability to drive consistently to a very aggressive standard…..

Sadly I’ve no access to such a track and my fear levels and lack of skills limit my ability to drive consistently aggressively…

The closest anyone came to it was Top Gear using The Stig (in fact there were several Stigs) and a huge airfield to use as a test track..

There we saw the Z4M and the 35i among many others..

Pure straight line acceleration is a very narrow snapshot on real world performance..and brutal to the car…

I will do some dragy runs shortly now I’ve found somewhere I can get upto 130mph straight and level.

Next year I’ll go to Elvington (very long airfield) and see what she does over a mile dash.. :driving:

I thought you fitted Quaife LSD to both cars ?

Did they not have an impact ?

Like the idea though

Oh yes..buggar..you’re right ..I’ll update the charts..also on reflection didn’t reflect the impact of moving from runflats strongly enough so will amend that too..
