Power loss under acceleration

Hi all,
This evening I went for an overtake on a slow moving MX-5 :).
And it was slow moving for an MX-5, about 40mph, on a slight upward incline on a not too long straight piece of road.
So I dropped down into 3rd gear and was about a quarter of the way into the overtake, still behind the MX-5 when I felt a slight loss of power and at the same time there was what I can best describe as a rasping sound. I pulled back from the overtake and normal service was resumed. No warning lights on the dash either.
Just wondering if anyone might have any thoughts on this. I'm thinking along the lines of a leak in the air intake system. I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I can spot anything obvious.
The car is going into the garage on Wednesday anyway to have new oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets fitted, so I will ask my mechanic if he will do a visual check and a scan as well I think.
Thanks

Renewed the oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets / seals today (that is to say my mechanic did).
The old seals were shot to bits it seems, probably the originals on a 2007 car, and were rock hard and flush with the mating surfaces.
The whole set up was leaking oil badly and my mechanic wondered whether it might have even compromised the pressure in the camshaft vacuum system.
I went for a 50 mile drive later on in the evening and everything seemed to be back to normal again.
I hope it's fixed, but too early to be sure maybe.
