Looking at getting a set of 18,s refurbed so been getting some quotes etc & 1 guy has mentioned full shot blast & then powder coated to my colour choice .
What are the pros & cons of going for the powdercoat route as opposed to paint & lacquer ?
Cheers

Powder coat is much more durable and will resist the effects of brake dust much better. Lacquer over a base coat will i.m.o. (and experience) will deteriorate much more quickly.

Thanks . so if the costs were similar powder coated would be a far better job ?

Yes - but even if powder coating were more expensive would go for it as the best option.

I agree with Alan it would be my preference. One thing to consider - the finish isn't 100% as nice as paint, but that doesn't bother me, would rather have a dust-resistant finish.

Cheers , one mobile chap wants £240 ( not powder coated ) & will do all 4 in new colour finished in 4 hours :o errrrr "what about baking the top coat ?"
"no need mate" he said " i use high quality UV products that cure in 2 minutes :(
I,m not convinced with that one :|

I had my winter wheels powder coated by the Wheel Specialist and they took a good 24 hours. They quoted me £100 per wheel for 108s so that's a good price but I would also be suspicious. A quick search for UV powder coating shows it does exist but I would still ask to see some examples.

Andy - decent cheap place in Bradford charges £1 per inch per wheel + vat - so. 4*18+20% works out at under £100.

CAS Coatings - did Ruth's Elipsoids in light metallic flake for £1.50 an inch.

Give them a call - ill try to forward their number if I still have it - they had wheels for a couple if days tho.

Haha , bizarre but he's the guy i spoke to today , cheers though , think that's the final tick in the box

Lots of local recommends on various forums - he'll have all kinds in if you pop across to Eccleshill and chance to see the work in action. Old mill building with very few frills.

I don,t mind not paying for fancy reception's & busty secretary's  well maybe a bit extra for secretary :P
Ideal for me to drop them off as only working 2 miles away from them ,
Have the elipsoids worn well with the paint finish ?

When I had the 18's on my Z3 done earlier this year I paid £65 per wheel for acid dip, shot blasting, powder coat, paint & lacquer.

They told me they would be powder coated before painting and that it was it! Didn't really give me a choice, not that I had any reason to argue over it.

That was with platinum in Swindon who used to be Lepsons. Bloody good job they made of it too. They had them for about 4 days.

I also went for a special order paint (from Range Rover) which cost me an extra £30. Even unbuckled three of them for £12 each. :)

A decent powder coating shop will get a finish as good as wet paint, but as posted above durable. Believe me having dome bare metal, wet paint an powder coat. I've treid adn run all combos.

Now had my 108's done with mirror chrome powder coat lips, black inners and smoked stars. Look awesome and people crouch down to closely check, not believing the finish can be powder coat and not polished metal and wet paint...

No sign of wear after 6 months - blasted and powder coated and then baked (might have a top coat on face too not sure)

And at that price you can get them done in a different colour next year!

Had my set of 224's recently refurbed by The Wheel specialist, shot blasted, powder coated to a colour of my choice and baked. Took them 24 hours to do and cost me £320 all in.

If your looking for a good durable finish, the best way is get them bead blasted, then powder primer , wet paint colour & then powder lacquer. That way you get the best of both worlds good & durable finish. I pay £220 for that process on 19" wheels.

He's right, UV paints dry immediately when put under the correct lamp, either Gallium or Mercury, one dries pigmented coatings the other is for clears, can't remember which way around though! ( we sell UV coatings into the kitchen/Shopfitting industries )

I'd still go with Powder Coating if possible, the only thing is they are higher build so if put on too heavy could obliterate any embossed lettering or number codes

I use Kilmarnock powder coating. Great service, drop the car off in the morning & pick it back up 5.30 job done & wheels balanced again

Just been quoted £150 per wheel + vat (£720) at Wheel Specialist ... this for the full kerbing bash fixing and powder coating job ... not horrible old wheels to start with but will get the full proper treatment anyway ... seems a bit pricey?
