I must admit the BMWs do leave a lot to be desired on the interior if you don't get the upgrades. The basic cabin specifications still look like they were designed in the 1990s, I mean come on, orange on black dot-matrix LCD for the radio and dash in this day and age? Makes it look like a 1980s digital watch. Even the cheapo marques have worked out that bundled interior 'tech' sells cars - go into a low-specced Kia today and you will still find full-colour TFT screens in the console and the dash.
The standard speaker package is also weak in the BMWs, you have to push the bass equalizer so hard to get any thump out of it that it ruins the mid-range. I specced the BMW Business speakers, which is the middle package - it adds a load more speakers and an amp for the subs and I find it to be a truly great system. I had to push the fader a little to the rear as bass notes were causing the front door speakers to distort slightly at high volume, but when I found the right balance, it is a glorious sound, you can push the bass a little harder in this config and you feel the subs thumping the back of your seat while still getting great mid and treble clarity from the door mounted drivers and tweeter.
It is what it is, BMWs are marketed for the driving pleasure, everything else is an option.
