It would have been easily swapped even for a Mech Eng like me! (or was )

Maybe because these days it has to be suitable to be fitted by a millennial, who may well be less competent than a former Mech Eng like you?

I'm just glad my boiler is an antique Potterton Profile that's probably 40 years old - it may not be too great on emissions, but it's simple and doesn't have much that can go wrong!

Of the Thermocouple and Pilot light variety?

I've no idea about the Thermocouple, but it has a pilot lit by Piezo ignition which is cutting edge for me.

The thermocouple is the thing heated by the pilot light - if the pilot light goes out for whatever reason, the thermocouple cools and shuts off the gas supply to be the unlit pilot light jet.
