Potential Problems (and how to spot them)

I'm considering buying a Coupe (either SE or //M version). I'm aware that common problems are the rear springs, window mechanisms and (sometimes) rusting on the edges of the tailgate.

I have 3 questions:

1. Are there any other common issues that I should be aware of with either model?
2. How might I spot a broken spring (is it obvious if you crawl under the car?), a problematic window mechanism, or any other common problems?
3. Are there any warranties that forum members have found particularly good. In the past I've kept money aside in case of unexpected bills, but I've been (touch wood) lucky with my Mazda and Subaru.

Thank you.

With non M model's i wouldn't get too hung up on warranty requirements or go looking with paranoia about potential faults .
The springs & window regulators as you mention can & do go pop without warning but are not that costly to replace .
Engines are pretty much without faults if looked after correctly & even a set of discs+pads all round shouldn't cost you more than £250 / £300
I would check even treadwear on all tyres & feel for tramlining whether runflats or not as they can suffer from handling "quirks" on all model's
Probably one of the most common faults is wing mirror glasses falling out  seriously they can do this with no warning :D
Check front fogs for misting / condensation & if no sign at all you must have found a faulty car :P
Not sure where in Yorkshire you are but a PM to "Jared" may enlighten you as they have had 2 coupes & still has a SE version  good luck hunting :driving:

Potential issue although not common but to be aware of on non m cars .HVA noise on cold start, only really on little used cars. Bmw never cured this one.

Hi - check out the link in my signature which lists things to check when purchasing - not all specific to the coupe and some general purchase checks but will help ensure you don't but a 'lemon'

Thank you, that's a very comprehensive and helpful checklist.

A bit of googling suggests that ABS problems can indeed be tricky, and possibly expensive. I guess there's no way of predicting those when viewing a car.

What are people's thoughts on warranties?
