Potential new owner

As a potential new Z4 owner, thought I would just introduce myself.
If all goes to plan, i will be looking to buy a Z4 in the next month or so.

As I have just turned 60, I am looking for something to replace my Westfield which is fantastic fun (200 BHP, 600Kg), but perhaps now need something a little more civilised! The Z4 seems to fit the bill perfectly.

For now I would keep the Westy as well (It does need some work done on it so would be sorned), but now just learning about all the Z4's available.
This seems a great forum, and the advice on here seems first rate - many thanks in advance!!

I would ideally be looking for a facelift 3.0si roadster, but the earlier 3.0 or even 2.5si would be on the list as well.
Happy to take opinions as the 3.0si's seem rare beasts, and command quite high prices compared to the others.

Budget would be say 5 - £8k.

Anyway, off to cook Xmas dinner now, so I will look forward to a bit of banter and looking to learn from your experience.
Cheers!

Hello and Merry Christmas ,

There are quite a few forum members up your way that meet up quite often so if you are successful you will have plenty of meets if that`s your kind of thing . Good luck with the search  Hope the Christmas dinner went well .

I certainly get out and about in the Westy (even in winter) as the roads here are generally deserted. I can go on a 2 hour drive, on B roads and hardly see another car. I have also organised runs in the past around the galloway forest area. We also have the highest village in Scotland a few miles from me, with a couple of superb passes (Mennock / Dalveen) just up the road.
Hope to meet a few owners when out and about.
Dave.

Welcome- beautiful part of the world you live in; I have friends and relatives in ruthwell area

Always wanted to run the z4 up there!

That’s what I did and found my ideal car, being sold by a forum member and owned and really well looked after for 8 years by the one before to a fanatic state. Serviced every year regardless of mileage and lots of stuff added and changed. When I went to look at it I could not believe my eyes. Everyone that sees it says it looks brand new. So, yes it’s a good place to buy. Hope you have the luck I did.

Hi Davep

Good luck with your search, all the engine variants mentioned are great. You are more likely to find either a pre Face lift 3.0l or 2.5si. However as always stated it’s always worth buying on condition. These are great cars and you are certainly in the right place for help and information 👍

Hello and welcome Dave,

At £8 to £9k you may even find a 23i e89 although this may not cover your need for driving thrills.

Good luck with the search

[ref]davep10000[/ref], hello, and welcome, as OGR says if an E89 is in consideration and you want a 3.0 this may be worth a look

for clarity, the car is nothing to do with the OP of this thread or me

Thanks all for the welcomes, I much prefer a friendly forum like this compared to facebook....
As for model / engine choice, for now, I can only go on specs and figures, which I fully appreciate is only a very small part of the picture.
Leaning towards a nice 3.0si facelift (but only because I dont know better maybe?!) or possibly a good earlier 3.0.
I like the thought of an E89, but maybe for a 'first' Z4, the E85 seems to tick the boxes, especially with the budget.
The thought of heated seats is very tempting (yes I am becoming soft in my old age..) and my wife may even drive a Z4 (she would never drive the Westy).
Cheers
Dave.

The e85 is more of a roadster with a better drive according to most, while the e89 is more of a GT car although saying that the e89 can still be hustled along and has the added benefit of being a coupe when the UK weather is not playing ball.

It is horses for courses and the e89 is great for what I need but I would have no issues with an e85 either

I think Ole gits rule has summarised the differences between the E85 and E89, both are great cars for different reasons 👍

That has to be the best of both worlds. E85 money and has the N52 (255bhp) n/a 3L engine also from the E85. Low mileage too
Welcome DaveP BTW

Hi and welcome to the forum davep1000
After owning a tiger kit car for a few years I can definitely appreciate the driving experience that comes with these kind of cars, but for me now I prefer the e89, I haven’t tried the e85 so can’t comment on them, but from what’s said they are more of a back to basics roadster.
Good luck with the search which ever you go for

That E89 seems remarkably good value, and very tempting, but as OGR says, its probably an excellent GT car, but maybe not as involving as a E85. (Happy to be proved wrong though!!)
I dont think that E89 will be around for long - good MOT history, low mileage, leather interior etc

FWIW, I think the view of many E85 owners who went E89 is that 'involving' equals noise, vibration, poor ride... :driving:

Most of the E89s I think handle at least as well or if not better than E85s..they certainly have a better chassis..

Having said that I personally like E85s, I think they are very characterful and cute.

Hi and welcome to the forum Dave.

As I've only had E86s (Coupes) I can't offer anything on E85/89 differences.

But the N52 engine in the facelift 3.0Si models is brilliant. The only downside is that less than 1,000 E85 3.0Sis were registered in the UK, which is why they are hard to find!

Anyway good luck with your search.
