Potential new owner after a few hints after seeing a Z4.

HI All,

I went to look at a Z4 yesterday. The car is a 53 plate 3.0l with 75k on the clock, however there is one thing that worried me.

When idling the car sounded a little rattly and tappy or tinny. My mate who came with, who i trust, said stay clear, the noise just didnt seem right. I did a forum search on injectors,] as that is what we thought it might be. The only useful post I found ended up with a car losing 1 cylinder which sounded expensive to fix but was done under warranty so I could not get an indication.

The car itself looks like it needs some love, with scratches and a dent on the front wing. This worries me, if the exterior is like this then the engine could be thrashed. Another alarm bell, there was a 5l oil bottle in the boot, to me this is not normal, a car should not need to carry oil like that.

Other than that the car is very nice, black with black leather, SMG box, zenons etc all for 7450. The car is cheap as it is a repo through my mates work with staff discount.

I really want it, i think the price difference could cover the cost of making the car mint but the idle is bugging me...any thoughts?

Cheers

Certainly sounds like it has not been cared for that well :(

There are plenty out there though - Think I would keep looking...

and welcome to the forum

There is an inlet valve/flap thing that seems to need replacing at 60k+ miles. If it is this then it is no big deal. Mine was a bit rattly when I bought it with 61k on the clock. I could tell it wasn't the 'core' engine so went ahead with the purchase.

However, from the rest of your description, a tatty car = a tatty owner/treatment so I would agree it is probably prudent to move on. There are plenty of cars for sale.

Definitely one to stay away from, without a doubt. There's loads to choose from, and you're better off waiting for the right one. You'll regret buying one just because you want one.

That said, go with your instincts. Mine had a little dent on the front splitter when I bought it, but that didn't put me off, as the rest of it was immaculate!

malc101, welcome to the forum...
As others have said, pass on this one...
... and keep looking... :driving:

Thanks, your Z4 looks really good...nice blue, dont see many in the UK in that colour.

So does anybody have a 3.0l for sale? my budget is £9k, which i know is not going to get me a mint car but its all i can get together without taking a loan. There is no way I am prepared to pay current interest rates!

I paid £10,200 for mine a 30l with only 35k fbmwsh so if your looking for one with 60k + you should be able to get one for your buget but i think I was verry lucky :D good luck with your search

Keep looking dont rush....mine 03 car..14.5 K...full BMWSH...not a mark on it...apart from shabby wheels [ laquer blown ]..all the goodies inc body kit ..11.8 K. :driving:

tappy sound wouldn't bother me too much (unloaded bearing and shafts in tranny) but the dent and the oil bottle sure as heck would! Oh, and if that oil was anything other than full synthetic (and the "good" stuff at that) I would run, not walk, away from this one.

you wouldnt have said that if you heard my engine, it required a complete new head under warranty
