Potential neighbour dispute - Advice?

Having had a few issues with past neighbours I would have had a firm hand from the start, I would have been polite and clear that they can't plant bushes or anything on your land or people generally take the piss out of you.

They aren't "security gates" per se. They are decorative gates that aren't see through!

LOTS of people these days have CCTV at home.

I live in a very low-crime area, in a beautiful part of the country, but I still have security lighting and locked gates/secured garden, plus house security (monitored alarms, cameras etc.). It wouldn't matter where I lived, I would still have a high level of security. Scumbags aren't restricted to any area these days.

If i wanted gates + walls for swank & vanity fair do's but if i thought i needed it for security i'd be worried i was living in the wrong postcode

I'd be pretty miffed and upset if you swung a solid gate across my window. The weaknesses in the outlook of a property sometimes only become apparent after you've moved in and lived there a while, which is what your neighbour now realises. Is there anyway you could compromise with your neighbour and find a well engineered solution that keeps you both happy? I've seen wide gates that can run on a track that can goes around corners, for example.

Having previously been involved in a neighbour dispute over parking, I can't tell you the relief when we stopped locking horns and finally had a calm, reasoned chat with a compromised outcome. Life's too short for animosity, regardless of if you 'never back down' etc. etc.

As many have already said, check your deeds that you can put gates up, I have had problems on an estate in the past . . . with a box hedge.

I would be surprised if there is not a covenant covering this.

And yes, talk to the planners and see what they say.
