Potential heart breaking decision....

lol

I went halfs on a brand new house with my brother.. my monthly payment is $1100, this is ignoring bills and all that poop

i am a high risk owner of my z4m paying 8% on a 4 year lease which costs me $1650 insurance included

Im 24 and live with my parents the house was an investment for now, and Southern Ontario has been hammered with near record snow falls ill say if we're lucky... mid april ill have the car out again...

Right now today i have a near $3000 payment for a house I dont live in and a car I dont drive, and I also work road construction whichs means ;) ive been laid off since christmas and wont be back at work till april :D

still 100% justified

Sorry to hear you're thinking about getting rid :(

With your wheels etc would it not have cost you about £1500/month if you were to trade it now? The depreciation hit is bad but if you were to average it out over 3 years it might get a bit better, no?
I'm fairly sure the depreciation will even out - and I expect (well hope) it'd be worth at least £20k at the three year mark.

Senwar, I am in a near identical situation to you regading usage. I have done 5,000 miles in 11 months, work mainly from home, and do not really need a car for business. We have an X3 for load lugging & long "utility" journeys and I don't even want to think about depreciation?

That said - I am with PaulN and others; to me, owning a car like this is a pleasure and a priviledge over and above pure £££'s. One day, I know that age and/or reduced circumstances will be such that I need get something more practical and cheaper. For example, if I lost my job; my good health; or a family member needed £££ help - the Z would go without a moment's thought. Until then, I will relish every moment of ownership and in particular:

The smile whenever I turn the key :) :)

Turining heads at the bus stop

Catching yourself looking out at the drive when the sun hits from particular angle

Spending a whole Sunday, cleaning and polishing

Roaring away from the lights like some pathetic 17 yo kid - "just 'cos you can "

Generally, just being able to drive a fantastic high performance car whenever I choose to.

This is why I won't be selling or a while - but the fact that you are asking the question, probably means that you know the answer?

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

You know what mate - you've just summed ALL my feelings up in one post (especially the bit in bold).

Having really had a good thought about this over the last couple of days, I think I'm going to stick with it at least for another 6 months (sorry pvr :P ) and re-asses it then. As I've said, its not an affordability thing, its a logical thing but I probably shouldn't be thinking logically.

Reading the comments i can see the opinion is to only sell if i can't afford it. I suppose its because i'm thinking of setting up my own business in 12-18 months thats making me think a bit more about money. but as that time is not here yet and I'm in a position to afford it (which I may not be initially if i go down the business route) then i feel i owe it to myself to stick it out at least for a bit more.

I think I need to get to a position where I use it more thats all.

Thanks for the comments, and I've took them on board, and thanks Al for hitting the nail bang on the head.

I'd keep it!

I had a Boxster for two years and sold it as I had a similar argument to yourself with myself!

I regretted it and have just bought a Z4M coupe and losing more money in the end...

You'll only end up selling the next car and buying back a nice sports car.

And property - houses are boring and not at all as much fun as a car which you can enjoy in full health :) (I should know I'm a property developer!!)...

Thanks mate

That was my worry - that I'd regret and end up buying something else.

Anyway, any lingering doubt has been banished today - had a call from Sandal BMW - over the phone trade value - £27,000. Car at invoice - £44,200. 39% depreciation in 50 weeks.

Excuse my language but f**k me.....

for what I've paid per month for this car overall (including the insurance tax and petrol) I could have bought two or three houses and paid their mortgage!

I've got your solution, let's trade. I'll pay your car cost and you pay my mortgage...I'll even let you keep the car!!! :poke:

Comparing a mortgage on a house to a car payment is apples and oranges...don't let that influence your decision.

The depreciation sucks and IMO makes no sense. BUT I look at it outside my window, look at the reaction from people in the street when I drive past who point/gasp/grin at it or each other and realise stuff it - there is nothing else for the money I would rather drive. Its menacing, its draamtic, its a piece of sculpture with serious pedigree and performance. Its a damn cool car, a dream car for many, and you only live once! Let the depreciation even out and enjoy it - tell the missus it would be financial suicide to change it now so you MUST keep it, its the only sound decision

:)

Just to say, as I mentioned in another post - the mrs has said all along don't get rid as she herself said I'd be making a massive mistake.

She's a keeper! (the missus I mean.... and the car!)

 That HAS to be the quote of the year in my books.

I have to agree with the reaction part. It is an eye catcher. I remember last summer in Toronto. People were actually pointing at my Coupe and ignoring 911s, Maseratis, and Ferraris. There was a yellow Lambo there and that was the only car that got more attention than my Z4M Coupe. For you guys who know Toronto - I was in the Yorkville area at the time!

I get double minded about getting a Carrera 4S when I look at a Z4M Coupe.

I think coming on here and expecting people to say "sell it" is asking a lot! :)

Im in the boat of deciding whether to buy the z4m or the 3.0si and i cant really justify the extra £150 a month the M will cost me when you take into account servicing, tax, insurance etc.

I can afford it - theres just no point spending silly money when you dont get the use out of it. Personally id sell the car and put the money to better use. Wouldnt you be better off getting an old lotus/vx220 or something for your quick weekend blasts esp if you dont do many miles?

:fuelfire:

That's where I think you're wrong scottish69, buying a car like the Z4M is never going to be a sound financial decision but if cars are a passion and you can afford it then why not take the hit and get what you want? I for one wouldn't want to be thinking back in my retirement years and congratulating myself on how much I've left for my kids by being sensible in my car purchases. You're a long time dead, keep the M !
