POST FaceLift Roof not working

Are the drains cleared during a service? I'm not sure they are. When I spoke to a Stealer last year about service prices, I asked for a breakdown of what was done at each type of service. Unfortunately, drain clearing wasn't listed. Service chap knew it was a Z4 Roadster. :o :driving:

Drains are not cleared at service, also it been said before that if the water breaches the insulation on the facelift motors then it gets trapped inside which is probably worse.

This isn't the first facelift on here to need a new motor, and as time goes on there will be more of them.

I'm currently in the exact same situation as the original poster. My post-facelift z4 roof stopped working the other day. I just moved to sunny California from Canada. 1 day after arriving my roof stops working... Go figure!!!!!! On its last successful close, i noticed it was strggling to close and was much slower than usual. I remember thinking.... That doesnt sound good. The 4-year warranty expired a couple of months ago :(

In summary, the roof locks and unlocks from the fully open and closed positions but the roof motor is not engaging to physically move the roof after unlocking

  • I've checked the fuse - ok
I've tested the rear shelf micro switch - car behaves as it should (except roof motor activity)
When I click the open button the roof disengages from the windscreen and moves about 1 inch and the windows drop. If I continue to press the open button, I hear a relay click but no roof motor sound.
I manually closed the roof and tried again (after disengaging the manual over-ride) - no roof motor response after unlocking - if i continue to press close button after unlocking I hear a relay click but no roof motor sound. I believe this also confirms the microswitch is not the issue.

Is there anything else I could check before I bring it to the dealer or an Indy?

Would a system diagnostic be able to confirm if the roof motor was shot?

If it is the roof motor, I'm considering using shipkillers excellent instructions to do the job myself, I just want to make sure the motor is the issue before I embark on the task.

Any help/feedback is appreciated

Thx

I'm just a bit confused by this statement: "In summary, the roof locks and unlocks from the fully open and closed positions but the roof motor is not engaging to physically move the roof after unlocking"

I mean how are you opening the roof to check ist operation from the open position?

Early on I had a small problem with the roof where it started to move from closed then just sat there, but I found that by sticking my hand out of the window and applying slight sideways pressure to the roof, it all worked fine. Dealer allegedly greased the windscreen frame locking points and its been rosy ever since.

Hi thanks for your reply.

I can still manually open and close the roof using the over-ride (twisting the red cable thingy in the trunk -turning it 90 degrees). The locking mechanisms still work when the roof if fully opened or closed.... But I have to physically move the roof into those positions.... Hope this is clearer.

OK with you now. Might still be worth checking the sideways pressure thing, as the manual method presumably has more torque to it than the motor so could be overcoming an obstacle of some kind?

Hi Moltobne,

Sounds like the motor to me, If the mechanism ( hooks ) are working, then the electrics are all fine, so you can ignore switches and fuses. At least in California it should stay dry enough to do the change yourself :)

Was the car parked inside in Canada or outside?

The car was always parked inside in Canada when I had it there (1 Year). It was originally in the North-east US and I do not know if it was parked inside or not as I purchased the car from a used car dealer in Canada.

Now that I'm in california, the car is temporarily being parked outside. Perhaps the car doesn't like being outside and this is her way of paying me back!!!! :?

Thanks for the suggestion... I tried it and still no go. Thx

That's what I'm thinking also. I'm just trying to see if there us anything else I should check before I bring her in. The online reviews for the local BMW Dealership here are scathing to say the least!!!!! Looking for a good Indy in Los Angeles.

Does anyone know if a computerized diagnostic would be able to confirm the roof motor was done?

Hi Moltobne,

I don't believe the computer can diagnose the problem. It was checked manually on mine ( despite telling them that's what the problem was ).

I think you've checked everything I came across, time to bit the bullet :(

Good luck....

OK so I bit the bullet today and I brought the car to an Indy here in Los Angeles Like gmetcalf....I can also confirm that the water in the motor issue still exists for Post-Face lift Z4 Roadsters

Here is a picture of my old roof motor with water damage. Shop said the drain was plugged and the motor was sitting in water and rusting :x

The complete job was done for just under $1,000 USD (approx 640 GBP). Motor was 408.00 USD and the labour $540.00 USD (A great deal in my opinion. Well worth the price for them doing it.)

Now I'm back to enjoying the roof and found a great Indy to do future work on the car..... hopefully very little work!!!

Happy driving again! :driving:
