This is a stunning car - which has for me had just about the right amount of magic dust applied .

tuppence worth but I dont think you would go wrong with a Boxter are you thinking 981 ? the reason i ask is perhaps a 981 in 2.7 form may prove a better buy than a 987 S.

I would factor in the ownership experience and certainly in scotland the owners club for P cars is pretty active with a good deal of meets that would be right up your street.

Thanks for your input Zermatt, I have actually been looking at 987 S but will now go and checkout 981 in the 2.7 form as well to see if it ticks the boxes for me and more importantly how the costs stack up

I have been checking out the Porsche scene in Scotland and it does seem very active which is positive and as you say adds to the whole driver/ownership experience

981 Cayman is a thing of beauty.... 987.2 not so much,and prices are on the tumble now as more of the newer models come on the market ..
Boxster would be out of the running IMHO... Lovely car but Cayman beats it

The new Mercedes are capable and quite pretty...ultimately quite boring and at the price point your buying will shed cash for a few years to come..

35is... Try one and see if they are something that you like.. Available a lot cheaper than your other options and quite possibly faster... If that's your bag..I don't think I would be buying fairly new.. Probably a 12 plate with low miles should see you spend mid 20k... You won't lose a lot in comparison over the next few years..

Hard decision Nick, I think you may have to ask the dealers to lend you some cars for extended test drives so you can come to grips with the matter...

...a weekend touring the Highlands in a loaner should enable you to decide if it's the car for you and, even if it's not, you'll have had fun

I made the change at the start of the year.... Yesterday missed not having a soft top for the first time in 7-8 years!

The wife has a 2012 SLK 220.... If you enjoy a sprinted drive you'll be disappointed moving from the Z to one.

The Cayman/ Boxter is the logical next step.... If you could wait till next yr there is a midlife refresh with 4cl turbo's.... So will prob see a dip in price for the older inline 6's.

I needed something more practical so went to the TT.... Basically a Golf in pretty clothes but handles much better than my Z... But is a little boring at times!!

Not sure how it will affect values when the 981.2 flat 4 turbo models come out

Did toy with the idea, but 2 cars I would struggle to park being in the city centre and only have one private parking bay with the property. Don't even mention parking on the street, seen to many accidents in my street coupled with double parkers

Good points, I hadn't realised there was a mid life refresh due next year, so something else to be considered and sleep on.

My mate runs a 350 SLK with tiptronic and I think it's a lovely bit of kit - sounds great at high revs and I love the auto box (7 gears a bit much but it works fabulously on kick down) plus it has the hard roof.

My dad has a 350 SLK and whilst it seems a nice bit of kit, it feels like it has even less space in it than the Z.

Shame you're so far away as you could've had a go in my 35is with pleasure.

The 'dark side' is a strong temptation is'nt it, hard to knock them.

I was just going to suggest if he fancied it, he could have a shot of my 35is because I'm not too far away and I've seen swiftly pass by where I live and out and about on occasion.

Merc and Porsche were on my lists when I started looking and ended up with the Z'd. Used to love the SLK but then thought it was starting to date and I wasn't too thrilled with the boxter interior.

But you've got the itch and it will need to be scratched at some point. Took me a year, kept putting it off but eventually I gave in when I found 'the one'
