There is normally some reasoned comments from this forum so thought i would punt this in the open for some advice/ suggestions.
The wife and I are looking to try and take advantage of the current low ish house prices and the trend for strong rental market by trying to buy a bigger family home to move into and retain our current home to rent out.
To do this means getting the deposit together, this is do'able but we want to try and move in relatively quickly, now we both have reasonable cars atm and have equity tied up in these cars, as cars are always a depriciting asset I was thinking about moving them on, freeing up some funds to make the deposit easier to come by. The problem is we are both used to nice cars but are willing to sacrafice to a point for a few years until we are safely in our new place.
Now without getting too far into particulars am i barking up the wrong tree with the following, wife has a tiguan, loves 4x4s and wants another one, its a nice 2008 model worth in the region of 13k, now i was thinking early X5, so cheap road tax and a petrol one for around 5k, from some basic sums it looks like the x5 will be around a grand extra in fuel a year so that still leaves me 7k up on owning the tiguan or am i missing something, was also thinking LPG conversion if we were thinking of keeping it long term. What are the other options of 4x4s, we both work hard for a living and can afford to run it and dont want to be buying 10year old diesel mondeo's or owt like that.
Any experience of X5 ownership on here, i like beemers and feel i know where I am with them, would most likely be looking at a 3.0 petrol and be expecting low 20's mpg, am I in the right ball park?
As for me- do you think its possible to get a reasonable z4 for under 5k? iv never had one with a folding roof before.
