Hi everyone,

I have been reading the forum and all the old posts at work for a constant 2 days now, so figured I should register and ask your advice, also knowing that it will be a bit biased!

I am in 2 minds to be honest, I currently drive a 2.7(228) Boxster 986 and have it advertised as I fancy a change! This is as far as I get however...

I have always loved the z4 roadsters and always thought I would own one, however know I would only ever have the coupe! As much as I love it its a question of the 3.0l or wait a few months until prices have dropped and get an M for sub £20k. My other problem is that I really like the TT, would be the 3.2DSG, the TTS is just too expensive even in a few months time!

So what does everyone think, 3.0l or the M. If it's the M is servicing and general everyday driving much more expensive or are the running costs relatively similar?

I know you will probably all same M for power and looks etc but it is really practical?

All opionions and views needed!

Thanks,

FCM

This has been discussed a lot on various threads. Best bet is probably to test drive both if you can. The M will cost you more to maintain and run. The 3.0 looks almost as good as the M and gives a good chunk of it's big brothers performance. If you plan to do lots of trackdays you'll benefit from the M. I don't so went for the 3.0 si. Previous car was a 400bhp Evo VIII MR FQ300 and my Z4 handles just as well as it did round the twisties. It's arguably quicker off the line too but obviously loses out at the top end. Same as the M vs the 3.0.

Anyway both the Mand the 3.0 are great cars so either is a winner. Hope that helps.

mileage is a high for the year, but i'm sure you can get it sub 20k. I reakon you'd have to wait at least 12 months for a decent M coupe to be under 20k.

If you want one soonish then i'd personally go for the 3.0si sport. you can get a lot of options for 20k and/or a much newer one with low mileage.

I have got both – though both roadsters – a TT 3.2 DSG 04 (which is for sale, if anyones knows anyone looking for one) and a Z4M 56.

Not sure what age you are planning to buy, but one major issue with the TT is the DSG gearbox. When it is perfect it drives beautifully and is a great smooth box, however, they do have a tendency to go around the 60K mark, normally just outside the Audi warranty mileage. :x I had mine replaced earlier this year at a cost of £3500 and it was off the road for 14 weeks (long story), it drives great now, but it is something to consider. Cannot comment on the M as they have only been around for few years, but threads on here will show any issues people have had. I have had a new wiring loom and sensor for the roof and a cooling fan under warranty though.

The fuel consumption on the M is far far worse than the TT, but it may have something to do with the way I drive.

The M is a 343 bhp against 250 on the TT and the speed is far superior on the M. I am going on a drift day next weekend – something I could not do in the TT and a track day later in the year, again the TT is not really quick enough.

I do miss the auto box and in particular the 4wd – if I still have the TT in the winter it will be my daily drive then, did not get stuck once in all the ice and snow we had.

The road tax cost should be the same.
The insurance is about the same group, depending on who you are insured with – costs me about £50 a year extra, but I am on a multicar policy.
Servicing for the M is more, but the quality of work and warranty seems better with BMW in my experience.
Repairs not had much experience with cost wise and my M is still under warranty, but the BMW warranty is great. Think main dealers parts and labour will be around the same.

I cannot comment on the 3.0 Z, but think general running costs would be more on parr with the TT.

As for looks well that is all down to personal preference, I like both but think the Z has the edge on the roadster. If I was buying a coupe then the Z is stunning and looks far better than the TT where it is the new or old shape. The Z4 is one of the best looking coupes around.

It I really down to what you do and your driving style. I was worried about the M not being practical enough as an very day car, but it amazing to drive and no where near as crashy as a lot of some of the consumer reports claim.

What I love about the TT is the colour range you can get and in the roadster it has a great boot space, the smoothness and 4wd drive. The BMW for me has the edge as the drive in the M is far more fun, it is not quiet as practical but it is not far off. I never feel tired driving it and I am a soft women driver.

Only thing to do as some others have said – go try all the cars you are considering and see what you like the most, depends what is the most important part of the car or driving experience for you.

Good luck hope you find what you are looking for.

I've see several Z4 3.0Si sport coupes for less then £20k with much lower miles then then in the advert above^.
Also 3.2 TTs are avaiable for under £20k as well, they seem to depreciate slightly faster then well specced 2.0TFSIs

Exactly this is where the dilemma occurs!

If I'm being honest I think I've made up my own mind and will defo be going for the z4 coup, and if I'm being honest it is more likely to be the 3.0l unless the M's depreciate enough over the next 2 to 3 months!

SO as of now I'm on the lookout for a black 3.0sport with nav and xenons, anything else a bonus...if anyone has one then let me know! Black or the dar grey!

Thanks

Love convertible's, hence the Boxster...but if I'm being honest I really want a mean looking coupe.

Defo black and already planned to do the black CSL's and a quad exhaust with dark tints...not everyone's cup of tea but my idea of excellent! basically to look like 'justincase's' car!

Hmm, interesting question. I have a Mk2 TTc 3.2 Quattro DSG and a 3.0 Z4 conv (both black!), and although they're both good cars they're chalk and cheese really.

The TT is quicker, makes a great noise and draws the looks. But it's based on a VAG floorpan, not a unique sports chassis, is almost as tall as a 3 Series, feels big, and the DSG box is harsh when pressed. The TTS is lower, but Audi won't lower the Quattro, I asked.

The Z4 was designed from the ground up as a sports car and feels more together (esp with no run flats) and the autobox is smoother and more intuitive when in manual. It's more alive, more precise, smoother, more subtle, and you feel part of it more. Things like door trims aren't so good, but the engine is much sweeter and it delivers @ 10% more mpg.

I've just noticed how many times I used the word 'more' when describing the Z4. Nuff said.

Just my opinion, try them both. But take a long test. The TT will possibly impress more in the short term but ultimately I find it less satisfying. More people wow over the TT but I value the driving experience, so I had to part with one it'd be the TT without question.
