Possible Engine Rebuild? 3.0i 2003

Overtaking at 80 Mph, Rumble and Engine Light stays on, Rumble through all gears,And when stationary rattle noise :( :( ,Yep I sure a couple of cylinders have given up the ghost, got it home,was 1hour into an over night dinner b&b with Julie, the Mrs,, so I think an Engine rebuild required :headbang: I live in Hornchurch East London, if any one knows a good contact, for engine problems :D managed to get to the inn in my other car.
 
I would do a compression check first before fearing the worse. Maybe something less sinister than you think it is. Coil pack failure for one. Also get the codes read to see what that says.
 
Depends on the issue, but if it is really that bad I'd think getting a 'new' engine could be more economical. As they don't fail often, the prices are pretty low due to supply and lack of demand - unlike the 2.0
 
I use power Developments near Basildon for my servicing. They may know of someone who can sort your 3.0i?

I'd be very surprised if it's an engine problem though. These engines are pretty much bulletproof.

I had an engine management light appear on my dash 300 miles into my 450 mile journey to Glasgow. I pulled into the services, let it cool down for 15 minutes and then carried on (with the dash light still illuminated). The next morning the light had gone off. I changed all 6 ignition coils soon after and haven't seen that light in all the years since that incident :thumbsup:
 
I only recall a couple of M54 failures on here in the last 8 or 9 years and I think they were down to overheating not being attended to, or maybe one short on oil. So it would be unlucky, fingers crossed for you :|

Hope it’s not as serious as you think, coil pack failure could be the Ilkley cause.

There are too many possibilities to be able to guess. Is the coolant full? is there oil on the stick? Any codes read?
Keep us posted, a truly broken M54 engine is a rare thing outside of overheating or no oil in the pan.
 
Just check everything out. May not need a rebuild... But if so, I recommend to buy another engine with low mileage. Removing the head of these engines is a PITA because sometimes the threads used to bolt on the cylinder head might be damaged when removing the bolts. I had an overheating problem with my M54B25 engine in January and just finished a swap. I could see that in the UK you may be able to find a nice working engine for what I think it is a good price.
Anyhow, just check the engine in depth to see what is wrong, compression, timing chain, VANOS, etc.

Was it definitely running on fewer than six cylinders? Or could your flywheel have expired? Any more info to share yet?
