Possible Clock or Electrical Problem.

Drove the car this morning and no problems, everything was fine. Started it up this evening and noticed the clock display on the instrument panel was flashing with two horizontal bars with a colon between them (--:--). I reset and time and everything seems fine. Is this just a random "gremlin" in the system or the harbinger of something worse to come? Thanks

Was the rest of the computer information ok? Ive only had this when disconnecting the battery... Are the terminals on the battery secure?

Everything else was fine. I reset the clock and no problems. Radio presets and other info appeared OK. Battery terminals are tight, first thing I checked after resetting the clock.

I have that happen when it get real cold sometimes.... :(
The people in Southern California are certainly weather wimps, (+/- more then 5 degrees from 70 and we complain). I hope my car isn't following the trend. It actually got down into the 40's last night, really cold! :D

Thanks for the info.

I had that on my X5 when I tried to start it in -28C temperature. The theory is that at very low temperatures the discharge from the battery is too low to perform all its duties so the inboard computers insure that the main electrical functions like engine ignitions are met and the rest go to hell. :( The clock is probably the first one to go since you probably already wear a watch, carry a cell phone, have an ipod with you, and quite possibly a GPS. :o

After resetting the clock everything is fine and I had no problems whatsoever.

Cheers.

I've had this problem this morning, the time and MPG reset itself, very annoying as I had deliberately been leaving it to see the MPG over the life of my ownership. Anybody got any ideas on why this has happened? From memory this happened in my Boxster S as well.....

Happened to me about 3 months ago as well... all trip computer settings reset themselves, no idea why, nothing unusual in terms of temperture, use etc and hasnt happened since... very strange!

Not a random Gremlin but caused by a genuine by BMW Gremlin (you can find them in most dealers as well, they're the peolpe who call themselves sales staff and try to rip you off when you try to part exchange and get a new vehicle...!)
