Portable Air Compressor

Want to get one for the Zed and other cars we have, general home use and that. Anyone got any recommendations? Not looking to spend mega bucks but figure better to get one new from Amazon, Screwfix, etc. rather than some of the used ones on eBay. Again any recommendations or experience with your ones? What to look for and what to avoid? Thanks :thumbsup:
 
Do you mean a plug into car one or plug into wall?

I have a cheap Halfords car one to do tyres that has lasted me many years.

I've also recently gotten a small Stanley one for home to do tyres, a bit of ACF-50 spraying and some other duties. It's ok. The curly hose and fittings need replacing with something better and it is bloody noisy for something so small, but it does the job and fills up in about a minute. Enough to do all 4 tyres on a car, just.
 
I've got the cheap and cheerful one which comes available from Aldi a few times a year. 2 sizes, I have the smaller - very pleased with it. Range of cheap accessories too, including an impact gun which made short work of 2 bolts I couldn't manage by hand when doing my rear springs recently.

Generally well reviewed too, they've been available for ages.

My wife bought me a 'PCL mk 4' air hose guage too, which is great for all the family cars, bikes, motorbikes etc.

Also a life saver for double airbeds!
 
Sorry guys, I’m defo after a Mains 230/240V one. Have a 12V one to use if I’m in a pinch but after the tyre and pressure function you can use on some tools, as well as blowing compressed air to clear dirt, clean filters, etc. Thanks. Will take a look into what’s mentioned. :thumbsup:
 
I bought this Wolf Air Sioux 100 litre Compressor early last year and it's been absolutely faultless. I don't know how I managed before tbh....indespensible :thumbsup: 20180119_153805.png

I have a SiP compressor - in fact I bought it 20 years ago!

The size of the tank and Cubic Ft/Minute are the most important values and depend upon your usage. 9CFM and 50 Litres is good enough for most home use. I run mine at 150PSI on 1/2" lines. This is enough for impact wrenches, spray guns, air staplers etc. and the tank size means the pump is not running all the time.

There's 2 main types on the market. Oil free for paint spraying and blowing out and oil feed, which reduces the amount of lubrication required, but needs a filter for spraying etc. Oil free compressors do not last as long and are more likely to seize if they get too much moist air pulled through and then the water vapour condenses in the compressor, causing corrosion and eventually seizing.

Don't buy second hand. You don't know if it's been run on the correct oil and what condition the tank is in.
 
Been looking into this further and was swaying towards the oil-free simply because it’s then hasstle free. I guess you’re right and it could mean other issues in a moist/dirty/dusty environment.

What sort of dB are you (guys) running on your machines? I think this could be one of the most important factors for me now, when previously it hadn’t even crossed my mind!
 
Filled mine with the supplied oil to the level when it was delivered in Jan'18 and the level hasn't moved since :thumbsup:
It is bloody LOUD when the motor's running :o which is why personally I wouldn't go less than a 100 litre tank :thumbsup:
 
The only quiet ones are the vane type, but they have maintenance issues and cost a lot more.

Mine is really loud, but shut in the back of the man cave it's not too bad. I wouldn't use it before 10.00am on a Sunday morning though...
