Usually Porsche threads on here get a similar reaction, we're all in Zeds and not Boxters/911s for a reason I guess, I do like the 997 a lot but I'd be tempted with an XKRS also if I was in that market. That one looks great in red :wub:

I came very close to buying a 997 before I bought my coupe (in fact I bought the coupe at a Porsche dealership), but was scared off by the lack of engine access. I like to do my own wrenching when I can, and everything about the Porsche screams "don't even think about it, junior".

even as a confirmied 911 nut, you couldn't pay me to have a cooking 996 911. i'm sorry but i've got a lot of experiance of these cars & nothing can ever make me believe anything other than they were built down to a price, & not a 911 price either but rather the boxster on which it's based on & which would have cost what, under half the retail price of the C4S? a third?
GT3's & turbo's are a slightly different matter but i still feel the build quality is shocking, insofar as if i were putting 35 large into one (which i tried to do on many occasion) i'd have to convince myself i was paying for the engine & getting the rest thrown in for free.
as for the C4S, i actually think rather than the pick of the cooking 996 models, they're simply the most over priced of them all. slower, wider & heavier than a c2 or c4, lacking in the muscle to back up the looks as well, people will constantly tell you how residuals are so much better than a cooking C2, but to be fair i don't buy it due to the fact that people will tell you a standard carrera can be had for £10k, & yes they can. but, it will be an early 3.4 with stellar mileage, crap colour combination, patchy history & all the rest of the crap that comes with them. to get a good facelift 3.6 C2 in essential manual you'll be looking at closer to 20k so there really isn't much in it.
& before you think of all those manual low mileage C4S' up for late 20k's, think on how long they've been up for sale & if they ever do shift what the sale price may actually be.
i'd personally wait until the 997 gen 2 cars come into budget then at least you'll have a relatively stress free life with regards to the engine (if not everything else that fails on these things), if that's too far away i'd rather have the 997 for it's interior & front lights if nothing else.
any questions OP feel free to ask, i've crawled in & around plenty of these over the years in my bid to try & unearth a good example & can tell you what to look for.
oh & by the way re the tiptronic, my old man is 64 & a confirmed slushbox fanatic & even he thought it was terrible.

Tom I really wouldn't lose sleep over it if I were you. Ive got the standard Z4 coupe and it breaks my heart sometimes when I look at it in the garage parked next to my fathers cars. He's the proud owner of a 16m Scuderia and a 997.2 Turbo S cab with a type 1 etype roadster in between.
At the end is my little Z, but while I can't match the superiority of his vehicles yet, I still get into the Z and think hey, there's plenty of power under the bonnet of the Z to have more than enough fun with. And I can honestly tell you those garage queens my dad owns never see the light of day, so I'd rather have a car at the moment that I can use on a day to day basis and not have to worry about the cost or risk of doing so. Besides, although you can buy a warranty, its not just the risk of repair, it tyres, insurance, parts.....the list goes on, and the M you have will be just as quick as a 996 non turbo.

For me it’s quite simply they are looking dated, and the interior is shocking, I owned a 3.2s 986 and did like it great little car, it even had all the toys and interior was really tasteful but it was still god awful and the 986 and 996 are of course the same inside. Blimey - all these references to such exotic cars - I feel like a pauper ! At 23 I had an MG Midget !! Your insurance for an M must be astronomical . I like the look of the Porsche and now I'm an old git of 63 with no mortgage and a healthy bank balance I could buy one but would not be happy about the depreciation and running costs - I can think of better ways to spend my dosh before I snuff it. I personally prefer the look of the zed anyway so I'll think I'll stick to it.

1) I would suggest you don't mention your dad or his car again on this forum as it's making you sound like a complete and utter kn0b
2) Complaining at the age of 23 that you have a Z4M but really would like a porsche just antagonises everyone else here who's had to spit blood in order to earn enough money to buy an M... myself included
3)Every Tom, Dick and Harry has got a Porsche now. They are so common, I would call them the Vauxhall of Sports cars... If you really insist on having one, get yourself an early 90s Turbo 911... Now that's a beauty :wub:

How's it making him sound like a knob talking about his dad's cars? A fair few people have done the same in the past and surely as a car enthusiast forum this is the sort of thing we expect.
As for the comment about his age and other people being pissed off that they've had to work hard to get their cars, why are you assuming that Tom hasn't? Do you make the same assumption about all people under a certain age with luxury items? I think quite a few people here have an ideal or dream car they would like to buy if they could afford/justify it and all he's doing is vocalising it.

the z4m... lovely machine... i park at the family garage over winter period (my garage is too small for me to work on the car) with some serious exotica.... i dont think ive ever felt nothing but pure joy with my ///M car.... I dont know what it is but porsches have never really made me think i WANT one.... well... apart from the gt3 rs 4.0...... That car is ME!!!
im very happy with what i own really, otherwise you kinda taint the ownership experience by always wanting the Next car...... im 5 years into z4///M ownership and i can honestly say, their isnt much id swap my z4m -s/c for.....

I trip over them in London and dont get excited at all by how they look. BUT the driving experience and affordability compared to the competitors is very tempting.
