Porsche Cayman S 2006. Should I?

Its the only car that has seriously had me tempted to leave Z4 Coupe ownership.

I have previously owned a 2.7 Boxster (2003) and thought it was the dogs danglies, until I was doing to many miles.

Probably been discussed to death but searching for 'Cayman' on here brings up a fair few pages!

My question is....is it worth the change? My car is maybe worth £8k and the cayman will be £15k ish. I have read about bore scoring and rear main seal leaks on the 3.4 engine but its hard to quantify how common this problem is. I would take out a warranty anyway just to be sure.

Anyone got any first hand experiences of this car and what to look out for?

Thanks :driving:

I've given a Cayman S a bit of thought lately also, the well documented engine issues are a bit of a concern though!

An opc warranty will only replace with the same type engine with the same design issues......which won't help you sleep at night :|

If I were to do it, I would probably look for a car being sold with a failed motor (Seen a couple on Autotrader, decent spec and relatively low miles) for around 9K - factor in 5-6K for a Hartech engine rebuild (Forged liners, upgraded IMS etc).....Hey presto bullet proof Cayman s for 15K

This is what a work colleague has done recently with an 08 boxster, the quality of Hartech's machining and rebuild is very impressive and well worth the extra expense over a "Standard" engine rebuild.

Whatever you do they are a superb drivers car :driving:

Good luck.

PS from what I've read the vast majority of striped/boroscope inspected engines show some signs of bore scoring, how Porsche have got away with this is shocking.

Its the one and only reason I did not buy into Cayman or Boxster ownership. I did also read in my extensive research that low mileage little used cars were more prone to the likes of bore score and the intermediate shaft bearing problems. The 3.4 block was under engineered which is why the 3.2 had less problems. Its all just pot luck that could cost you dear.

Surely if you get a warranty it should be fine, do it I say.

I'm waiting to see how Lux gets on with his as looking to change next year, however budget will be limited to a standard Cayman but love the latest shape, power is down a little though compared to my M135i and wonder how they are as a daily driver, never driven a Porsche so new to me.

Tim.

I would only go for a 987 GenII or a 981 Cayman. The Gen I 987 had the bore score issues. This had nothing to do with mileage but how it was actually driven. Usually coming to a complete halt after a spirited drive and then booting it again meant accelerated wear on the pistons as they were not effectively lubricated quick enough and ran hot.

Hope this helps. I am saving up for a 981 at the moment but planning on keeping the M if I can.
