Porsche 996 (1999) or z4 2.5i (2003)

Hey guys,

I'm in a little dilemma at the moment. My brother currently drives a silver 996, has around 30,000 miles on it, but its closing in on ten years. He wants to make a deal with me (a swap) for my z4, but I have to pay him an extra 8000 USD to him. I like the 996, but i'm very much turned off by the silver color. the interior is spice red, which i love, but I'm so attached to the zed for some reason, since i've had it since it was brand new, and has always been under my care. What would you guys do? Any plus or minuses you can think of on both cars would be great. The 996 packs quite a punch though, with aero kit (gt3 styling) and 19 inch wheels, while my zed is all stock parts. But with the 8000 usd, i can do quite a lot things to the zed..let me know what you guys would do and consider in this situation.

I can't see why take on a car that you say you don't like the colour of and exchange for one you have owned since new and still like.

If you have $8000 spare think what you'd get in a Z4 as a trade plus the cash.

I've got a soft spot for 911's, but not so much the 996 (although wouldn't say no to any!).

If you can afford the running costs - which I'm guessing will be significantly more, servicing/etc - then I'd go for it. That's assuming the values tally up, i.e. is $8000 a fair amount to pay on top of your Z4?

forgot to make an important point, the 8000USD is more like 4000USd. Where i am, european cars of this grade is double the price. But still, for me its still 8000usd ...

When I got my Z4 I considered Porsches but part of what put me off was the relatively huge running costs, and poor reputation of the local stealer. Talking to a bloke who'd had several recently and every service cost him £2k min.

i'm considering it for other reasons. Since I will be doing my brother a favor in a way if i get the porsche off his hands. He says the running costs is getting to him and he's getting ready to settle down and get married or whatever. Now you can see the real dilemna. He already has a sedan for the future family and me being young and single should jump at the chance of owning a porsche. the other reason why i would consider it is cuz of the extra power it packs.

In that take the Porsche if you can afford running it. No doubt it's a better car and your money is going to your brother who needs it.

I had a same dillema while a go for my 3.0. My friend had a 2000 996 with 80.000km which I was interested however I coundn't part out with the Z for some reason. When I testd drove the 996 it did not feel much faster than the Z...

It's not a better car at all. I've had 12 Porsches (I know it's stupid) from 996 3.4 (which is yours) through to 2 996 turbos and 2 993 turbos. The 3.4 is a distinctly average car with quite a lot of problems to look forward to. I'd suggest that your bro sells his car and buys yours leaving you with a pile of cash and the ability to choose a "better" 911 such as a later 3.6 facelft 996 or a nice narrow body 993.

Even better you could by a z4mc or r and wipe the floor with any 911 that doesn't have turbo or gt after it's name!

what happens if you buy the porsche and it breaks down after a week or a month, who is responsible for getting it fixed? dealings like this with family can lead to a bitter taste. beware. :|

i looked at the boxster before purchasing my zed. albeit not a 996 i wasn't very impressed.

What will happen is that my brother will draft a contract and we'll both have to sign it. If it breaks down within a certain time period both of us are liable to half of the fix cost. But yeah, i'd still hate him for sometime hahaha.

My colleague here in Tampa has a 1999 911 base Carrera and I can barely keep up with him and I have a Z4MC. Based purely on performance, the Porsche is a hands down winner. However, like you said the running costs are prohibitive and like you I don't dig the silver color. If you do take the car, have the coolant reservoir checked. The 1999 911 was the first year Porsche had a liquid-cooled engine and the plastic reservoir has a defect. It is highly susceptible to splitting in two. :( Allegedly, they got it right with the late 2000 models.

Good luck.

I believe this 911 was already discussed in the forum. the 911 Carrera should be modded to keep up with the MZ4.
