Popping the Boot Lid

The boot pops open as it should on pressing the key fob. But it only just opens and I was wondering if I could make it open fully but fitting upgraded gas struts. Has anyone done this, it would be a most useful.
 
mine gives me enough room to get my fingers under the lip. doubt its got anything to do with the gas struts as i doubt that at that point they are in operation.

I think the lifting point for the first inch will be the curved springs near the hinges. I guess they could be removed and reprofiled. Struts balance lifting once in their range as Dario says and stabilising. There's a company in Derby who will supply new or re-gas to requirement.

Btw - I open my boot by lifting it where it curves over the rear lights. No gap to get fingers in but a good lip to lift the boot with.
