Pop up Nightmare

Right then. After several months of trouble free ownership my sat nav screen seems to have developed a fault:

Turned off ignition, sat nav screen started to close, spotted a traffic warden, turned the key again to move the car and sat nav screen stopped mid-closing.

None of the buttons seemed to have any effect and I had to close it manaually - which, incidentally, manual says is ok to do.

Trouble is, now it either does not pop up at all or pops up half way, or does not close at all. Any suggestions ?

And there was I thinking germanic electrics would be more reliable than those in my previous car, the Alfa spider... !

The monitors in the Z4 suffer from stepper motor failure, do the minor adjustment buttons do anything?

You could disconnect the battery fo a few minutes just to rest everything, wont do any harm just loose info from trip computer such as average MPG & MPH.

If that doesnt work back to BMW if under warranty otherwise ebay for about £120 but just make sure you get a Z4 one and not an X3 one as they are not the same.

My open close started playing up, new screen under warranty. Bill was in the 4 figure range I believe.

Disconnected battery - reconnected and to my horror sat nav returned to half open position - but using the stepper buttons returned it to fully open and then ok since ! Phew ! think I got off lightly, but stepper motor failure seems like likely diagnosis - i presume the ebay £120 price is for a 2nd hand screen ? A DIY job srhutch ?

Yes, you only have to take the rear plastic strip off where there are 3 screws (well, not in srhutch's case ... :poke: ), remove the airvent above the radio where there are two screws.

Lift the monitor out which is only connected by 1 connector. Put new one in, put screws back - job done.

Removal of the airvent is the most challenging part (takes me 2 minutes now, but first time can be a bit longer).

Looks like it is officially buggered. Started playing up again. None on ebay, any brekers yards or other sources that are worth a try ?

Having done some more hunting, anyone any experience of trying a car audio/navigation repairer to replace internal motors ?

I looked at trying to source the replacement Siemens Motor without sucess part number is 92 276 003 000 according to the one on my desk.

Strangely the screen motor seems to be functioning all ok again today. I wonder if the unusually hot weather has been running riot with the motors electrics ?? Thanks for part number - i have a techie fixing my mobile phone at the moment who loves repairing things - might try and see if he fancies dabbling with this before I start buying a repalcement screen - nothing to lose !
