There are sounds which resemble a disc spinning up??.... bit like a cd music disk when you select tracks if that makes sense ???

That's a good sign if it sounds smooth, doesn't rule out corruption but means the motor works and the spindle isn't stuck.

I'd contact that Facebook chap. Looks like he gets requests like this daily.

This unit for sale???

Keep it bookmarked just in case but hopefully you won't need it. It's not as simple as a parts swap as the new unit would need some coding but that's easier to solve.

Well strange conversation... he said he doesn’t deal with this unit??? Was willing to drive to London to take it to him... grrrrrr.......

If you swap the unit over and keep your existing hard drive then it might work without coding, that depends on what software it currently has. If it does need coding then it's easy enough, you can pay people to do it remotely if you have a laptop and cable.

If you use the hard disk that comes with it then you may need to enter some activation codes to get navigation and bluetooth to work. I'm pretty sure I can generate those for you just from your VIN number for free, i can certainly do the navigation one.

I didn't realise your radio screen was off like that. That does look like a unit failure rather than a hard disk issue.

Brilliant!!... ok I think that’s a way forward... I will purchase the unit. Best if I get my current one out and compare ??
It’s never had any Bluetooth on it so that’s not a worry.. so is the hard disk like a separate unit??
I would not expect any work to be foc!!.. you’ve already helped me out no end!!
Would it be ok to pm you on my progress??

I've done a bit of reading and it's very likely you'll need to code the replacement unit for it to work correctly.

It's a fiddly process so getting someone else to do it makes sense, I could probably manage it on my own car with a bit of trial and error but doing it remotely on someone elses car would be too much.

I saw one thread mention these guys: http://portal.bimmerretrofit.com
You can search for others, you just need someone who can code a CIC unit.

Keep the thread up to date on the progress, this kind of issue rarely gets mentioned for the Z4 so will be useful for the next unlucky person.

Will do!!.... I will search around and see if I can find anyone... unfortunately present climate dictates they won’t be open!!..
As I said I will purchase unit and see where we go from there..,thank you again for all your time in this it is very much appreciated

Hello Forum!
Happy easter to all...if nothing else it's sunny!
So update ... purchased unit from flea bay which was map updated and coded by seller!
Fitted unit ... actually quite easy :o
and hey presto all working fine!
So yes it was the head unit!...beware!
Thank you all again for the help and advice it is much appreciated!!
Stay safe all....

That's great, the eBay seller must have created all the codes on your behalf, did you have to send him the VIN?

I'm also interested to know what part of the old one failed.
