pop up fail

Hello Clan,
Unfortunately my first post is to invite your extensive knowledge to a sudden fault!!
My steed is a 2009 23i sdrive...
Driving along as happy as can be and then the pop up display decided to close on its own.... it then opened again a few seconds later displaying the BMW logo only... then closed down again... this continued until I got her home.
The radio, parking sensors are dead... and can get nothing more than the up/down pop up????
Any help or quick fixes most welcome.... my local independent has quoted £1800 for a new screen display?

P.S Once i figured out how to post pics I will sling a few in and introduce myself properly.

Hi Tintoverano,
Thanks for reply,
No I haven't got a code reader unfortunately... not yet!! a wise investment looking at all the other posts :o
Battery seems ok no problem starting or anything?... just odd it happened whilst driving along?
It wont power up immediately on start up, but comes up a few seconds later... then closes itself and opens again.. and continues this?
Really confused??....surely if its powering up and down its not the stepper motor within the screen?

Check battery, just because the car starts doesn't mean it couldn't be this, the systems on the car very susceptible if voltage is slightly low

As above. Definitely have your battery checked. The cars are notorious for strange things happening if the battery is failing.

Thank you Gentlemen for your prompt replies ,much appreciated.
I will certainly take your advice and have the battery checked as a first port of call.
What sort of readings would I be looking for on a failing battery?
Apologies I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to electrickery!!

I bet if you go to Halfords they will have a tester.

I bought my AGM battery and fitted there, about £150.

A healthy battery should be around 12.7v, if it drops much below this after a day or two of not being used you could use a new one.

Ok so checked battery... 12.6 and 15 on running.... I think that’s ok yes??
Still no joy?? ... any other ideas???.... it’s odd how it started playing up while driving along???
I’m going to check fuses tonight.. desperate I know :headbang: :headbang:

Again gentlemen thank you for your help and patience!!.... I will get a code reader and replace the battery as a matter of course...
see where that takes me... it could be power supply as the screen works up and down but as I mentioned the radio is dead and parking sensors etc.. which made me think fuse??

Thanks Robbi... that’s it then off to Halfords after work (yes I’m the one!!) for new AGM.. if they're open!!...
They all seem to be start stop does that make a difference ?? Mine has no start stop..

Thanks again Sir... filled me with confidence now!!
Although just thinking of the present climate is it essential??...........Yes!! :driving:
I will keep you updated if that’s ok?

Just a side note concerning batteries, I had a new one fitted to my wife’s 3 series cabriolet by the RAC on my driveway last Friday, ordered and paid on line, chose a time slot which was just over an hour later in fairness. The patrol man was great, knowledgeable and had to strip a lot of trim to get to the battery. I’m not a member by the way, battery was £179 fitted, I think it’s about £25 cheaper if you’re a member.

Huzzee4 thanks for info... I am a member so have that to fall back on I guess...
see how it goes .. thanks for your advice!!

Ok so new AGM battery fitted and coded to car.... still no power to radio etc??? Screen pops up and down.. up and down 🤬🤬🤬🤬
Any ideas gentlemen... will check fuses as I don’t know what else to do... not pleased with this car..

I agree with checking all fuses first.

If all fuses are ok then you should get someone to plug it into ISTA+ (BMW diagnostic system), a decent BMW indy should have it. It's probably a module/comms failure on the MOST bus, the MOST Gateway would be something that would prevent comms between the navigation unit and the rest of the car, the PDC system is on K-CAN and the CIC is on MOST and the unit that allows them to talk is the MOST GW.
