Pop & Burble from exhaust. Remap or no cats?

Hey everyone,

So I’ve recently been trying to sort out the exhaust on my 3.0 E86. I’ve removed the mid silencer, replaced the backbox with a Supersprint box. The tone is perfect, deep & not obnoxiously loud but noticeably loud. The only thing it’s missing is that nice pop & burble when I let off the throttle.

I’ve been told I have 2 routes to go down.
1 - remove the cats. With this I’ve been getting different information from different sources. Some lead me to believe there are 4 cats, 2 inside the manifold & 2 visible just outside the manifold. Whereas some say there are just the 2 that are visible outside the manifold. Can someone clear this up for me once & for all? Overall though I’m concerned removing the cats is going to take it over the top in regards to noise? Any one removed their cats & have anything for me to go on?

2 - remap. I’m more tempted to go down this route because I can have 2 different settings of over fuelling for the pop & burble. A subtle burble on standard & a crazier one with the sports button on.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a garage in Surrey/surrounding areas they’ve used to remap their cars? Has anyone else tried to do a similar thing and create that pop & burble successfully? I’ve seen the DLV videos & they do sound good but I want more burbling all the way down the Rev range, not just the odd one or two.

My e85 with the same N52 engine pops and bangs for days when I lift off. All that’s been done to mine is a back box delete. It’s actually quite ridiculous how much it pops. I love it.

A while ago I got my backbox modded and with that alone I got some nice pops on lift-off, especially near the red line - there it pops for ages. But since I've done a res delete and it pops all the time and it's considerably louder with virtually no drone.

That clip sounds epic! What did you do to your back box in terms of modding it? Is yours an auto or manual?

Mine is a manual, no other way really! :evil: I am not entirely sure what's been done inside the backbox, but I daresay it's quite similar to what DLV does (photos can be found on here).

No, it's not a DLV one; he's too far away and I didn't fancy sending him money for one and risk getting bugger all in return... The chap who did mine seemly doesn't do them anymore. But I'll ask just in case.

edit: No, I wouldn't say it's essentially a backbox delete! Those are louder, drone-y and cheaper!

Here's an interesting 'comparison'. 1st car going past is mine, so modded backbox and res delete; 2nd has the same backbox mod only; 3rd one is completely standard.
