Poorly M Coupe!

I've had my M Coupe about 3 or 4 weeks now, have done about 500 miles or so in that time, everything started off swimmingly, I was over the moon with it ... but over the last week or so a few issues have raised their head, anyone had any of the below problems?

1) It's piddling oil out everywhere :o I first noticed a few splashes on the ground in my car park space at work, then where I park at home there was a huge patch of oil which is really noticeable with all this rain. Then when I filled it up Saturday morning I noticed the petrol station forecourt was covered in the stuff. I've checked the level and it's marginally above the Min level so I'm pretty sure it's coming out of mine from somewhere :(

2) Probably related to the above but it no longer feels smooth or keen to rev, it may be me imagining it but it also feels a lot more 'tappety' than normal, something just doesn't feel right. Trying to maintain a constant speed of say 30 or 40mph and occasionally there feels a little hesitation.

3) When you engage the clutch in 1st gear there's a definite clonky knocking kind of noise. I've read loads about various gearbox issues on this site but this definitely doesn't feel/sound right, it only does it in 1st though.

All in all I'm a bit miffed, obviously the oil piddling everywhere could be something major. I bought the car Approved Used from BMW so hoping they can sort it all out for me. If they try and charge me for a courtesy car I'm not going to be a happy chappy!

Get it into the dealer asap!! May sound more tappety because it can`t maintain a decent oil pressure because of the leak. If it`s leaking when stationary and engine off, it will be pi$$ing out when under full load. Gearbox is normal in these I`m afraid. From my experience BMW are very good about warranty claims so get it in there, you could be damaging the car by driving any further.

BaJ,

Agree; get it to the dealer ASAP - if you continue to drive it like this you could be making it worse AND make it more difficult to get action from BMW as they could quite rightly say you were a contributory factor. Give the dealer a chance - your already assuming they may a charge you for a loan car! Make a note of every contact you make with the dealer, date/time etc, by telephone or whatever means AND GET THE FULL NAME OF THE PERSON you speak to each time. This is good evidence if things get 'difficult'. If they tell you to keep using it until they can 'fit you in' advidse them that in your opinion this may cause further damage to the vehicle. Its a 'brave' garage employee/technician/ or whatever that will then tell you to keep using it! If they insist insist on speaking to the service manager to confirm continued use. It's easy to get angry during this process (yes I'm guilty of that... ask my wife!) but keep cool - I'm sure you will.

I hope it's just something minor and will be quickly sorted. Whatever once it is sorted don't just collect the vehicle and accept that it's OK and drive away - arrange to return it after lets say 500 miles for a check that whatever it was is fully repaired and at THEIR EXPENSE and have the check documented. And for your inconvenience some compensatuion - the next servuice FOC as a sign of their goodwill, if you dont ask you certainly won't get. Remember dealers get paid for dealing with warranty claims so this is in fact more 'trade' for them in a difficult economic climate - if there is any reluctance it will generally be from BMW themselves.

Best of luck and I hope your problems are quickly resolved.

Thanks for the comments so far ... I totally agree about not using it and causing more damage.

It's booked in to be looked at on Thursday so fingers crossed, I explained to them that I was concerned about driving it so the next time I do will be to drop it off.

If I wanted a courtesy car then I'd of had to wait until Jan the 4th! Unless I wanted to pay £15 for a Toyota Yaris hire car, hmmm! I'll give them chance to investigate Thursday, but if it's something serious and they need it for a few days then I'll be after some wheels without me paying out my own pocket.

If it were me, I'd have called BMW emergency assist and got them to take it in. Then you would have gotten a free hire car for 48 hours and then the dealer would have to sort something out for you if they couldn't fix it in those two days.

Be careful if the dealer asks for any money for 'diagnostics' up front, as I'm still battling getting mine refunded after my engine was replaced under warranty (or 'goodwill' as they're claiming).

Hi,

That's most interesting ... I may have to look into that! I've been a bit disappointed with BMW since I left the showroom to be honest, I've received no info on BMW Assist, only what I've read myself on their website.

Can I ask why yours needed the engine replaced?

I'm hoping it's nothing that serious but in the event of engine replacement what happens to your service intervals? My next one is an Oil Service, then Inspection II ... does the car keep to this or does it change as the engine is a new lump!? Anyone know? Would the replacement engine have a negative effect on resale value?

Obviously I'm hoping it's nothing serious but preparing for the worst at the same time, I've not had it a month yet! :(

Simply put, the car was working one minute, stopped to go the bank, yellow EML came on when I went to start the car so switched ignition off & on and it went. Started car, car had lumpy idle indicating a misfire so switched off again and dash showed same yellow EML.

Called BMW Assist who told me I'd have to drive it to the nearest dealer as it was "only a yellow EML". Refused and eventually got them to send a patrol "to humour me".

Patrol spent 45 minutes starting/revving/stopping/resetting the car to no avail, and again repeated the it was "safe" to drive to the dealer. I refused, they relented and I got flat-bedded to the local dealer.

Dealer couldn't look at it immediately so was given a hire car for 4 days (seems weekends don't count towards the 48 hour limit).

Got a call on Tuesday to say that they couldn't find any problem initially and would have to start a tear down to investigate further. This was when I was told that I'd have to put a leave a CC authorisation with them in case the fault was traced back to something I'd done that was not covered under warranty. I had no problem with this as I'd not done anything to cause this.

A couple of days later I was given a list of everything they'd supposedly found and the news that it wasn't going to be a warranty claim, but they'd "see what they could do".

After being handed a potential bill of £23k for the engine, initial diagnostics and labour here & there, I was mightily relieved to receive a call to state they it had been sorted out and BMW UK would be footing the bill as a goodwill gesture. However I'd have to foot the bill for the initial diagnostics, which at the time I was more than happy to do.

However, as time has gone on and I've tried to get a clear answer from them about what actually caused the failure, I've been given nothing but the runaround, getting different answer depending who I speak to, and BMW UK have no record of my car being in that dealership at all, neither do they have any record of authorising a new engine via goodwill or warranty.

The first report was that the intake valves were stuck open and were letting the explosion from the cylinder into the intake and had damaged it beyond repair.

The second report was that a valve shim was missing and had scored the camshaft - 'scoring' turned out to be an oily fingerprint.

The latest is that some foreign body has entered the engine and bent a valve which has touched a piston and scored the cylinder. They can't tell me what that foreign body is or where it came from, but on that basis they are stating it's not a manufacturing fault and thus not covered by warranty.

The dealership will not return my calls and will not supply me with an invoice for the diagnotic work, nor a job sheet for the engine replacement so that I can add these to my service history come selling time - as there is now a nice gap in my service book due to the last 3 dealers not bothering to stamp it (10,000 oil service, new engine when Insp 1 due, running in service on new engine).

The latter part of this week will be spent driving between these dealer to hopefully resolve some of these issues - pity the car is not big enough to carry a posse larger than 2 people.

Jeez that sounds awful!! Sorry to hear about that, bet it`s left a sour taste in your mouth?
I`ve only been impressed with the level of service I`ve had from my dealer (Cooper Cobham) I had a EML light on when I picked the car up, they replaced the camshafts, VANOS solenoids all under warranty and gave me a brand new Z4 courtesy car all the while it was in the workshop. Car is absolutely awesome now, in very fine health. I`ve driven in total 2 coupes and a roadster and mine is by far the most sprightly.

Baj - Surely if you got this from BMW you are entitled to return it no fuss within a month/1000 miles. I'd say take it back personally...there will be other trouble free motors out there!

Hi,

They're taking a look at it Thursday, so I'm going to give them a chance to investigate first and see what's what.

I was looking for something like that (as a worse case scenario) though to see what my rights were but couldn't find anything, does anyone know?

Cheers

Hope you all get it sorted! Thought these engines would be bullet proof now(5+ years of development since first appeared in 2001), maybe they`re not, or you guys have just got unlucky? £23k for a new engine, holly shhhhheeeeeeeeeet

All approved used come with a standard no quibble returns policy for the 1st month/1000 miles. If you go beyond that then it's your statutory rights you will rely on. Obviously if they can't make the damage good then you're talking refund/replace with any vehicle (particularly 20k+) in the first couple of months ownership.

Sounds to me like the dealer found it was thier fault from a previous repair/service and are blagging it...

agreed.
imagine fighting this if it was out of warranty and no one took responsibilty.

It's never been to this dealer before, and it was it's first visit to any dealer since I had the general module replaced for the non-functional wipers.

Looking at everything they've said, it sounds eerily like a VANOS failure - but as they've 'disposed' of the engine (despite saying it would be sent to BMW to be checked out thoroughly) there's no way I can get an independent inspections.

It'll be sorted one way or another before Christmas.
