Poor old e89 (18i) slated again...

I think the power deficeit wouldn't bother your average buyer, its the branding that attracts. I'm surprised considering E89 sales why BMW bothered so I'm guessing its an attempt to broaden the appeal and get punters in the showroom, but why would you go for a 1.8 and spec it up?. 30bhp is quite alot to lose though over the 2.0 for what is a heavyish car

Im obviously biased.....I think its right to point out the de-tuned engine..my ideal spec would probably be a 28i but the 18i was in the showroom brand new and could have it for the summer.

I didnt buy it to go very fast ...just fast enough but did buy it because I love the look, love the hard top and love the quality.

I looked at the BRZ and GT86 (look identical) 0-62 in 7.6 secs and solid roof....so very happy BMW 18i owner.

Ps Still might order a 35is for March 2014 delivery but dont tell the wife!! :worshipbmw:

I somehow think you'd be saying the same in the BRZ.... For all the hype I just wish it was a bit quicker. But then that's not the point. I guess the same could be said for a 18i z4 :-)

37K wonder what toys were on that.

For that price that's my list price for my 28i Msport. Now we get the free Msport deal so could possibly slip into a 35i for that price now with no toys just the engine and a piece of foam.

I paid 26k for my 18i with £2300 worth of extras.. Can't complain!

Don't see why its being slated, it caters for a different type of person... I think its great

I've always thought of a boxster or cayman a "poor man's" 911..when it comes to a porsche go big or go home.

Granted the boxster and cayman are great to drive, but I think you will always wish you spent a bit more and got a 911.

Applying your logic, swap porsche for BMW, 911 for a 35is and a cayman for the 18i.

;)

What I said about a porsche is a completely different topic. The point I was making was I would prefer a used 911 over a boxster or cayman. Just my opinion on if I were to buy a Porsche I wouldnt be satisfied unless it was a 911.

Yes the boxster caters for a different person like I said about the 18i but you can't compare what I said to my porsche comment as I was talking about a boxster and 911...two completely different cars.

When I said the 18i caters for a different person/market we are still talking about the z4..

The 18i is costing me £1,000 less in insruance and 2k less in the actual cost of the car. Having said that, if I were 5 years older and there was only a £100 difference in insurance, of course I would go for a 20i or bigger engine.

If I had said a z4 is a "poor mans" 6 series then I could understand your point.

I don't get how "my logic" implies swapping a porsche for a bmw?

I'm not sure why we are discussing this anyways...we are all z4 owners... Shouldn't really matter which one we own but I was just defending the 18i because it does serve a purpose... :|

Maybe it does serve a purpose as some people say but to put an engine in a sports car with less power that an average diesel hatch would have doesn't deserve any praise.

If it's all about costs then just go for a second hand 6 cylinder model and avoid the depreciation as well.

Can see your logic but I guess some like myself prefer a new car that no-one else has slobbered in :) I understand why peeps would go for the 1.8 purely on running costs and wanting new etc but I don't see BMWs thinking as it's not that much of a steal over the 2.0

As mentioned earlier, insurance was a major issue at 23 (now 24) years old. There was a grand difference between them. Also wanted the facelift model and using the 2.9% finance deal on new z4s was cheaper than buying a used 2.0 z4 with a higher rate of finance. For a second difference 0-60 it's not a major issue.

Having said that, I did mention in another topic that if I had £23/24,000 in cash I would have bought an ex demo 2.0 over an 18i (also if insurance was cheaper).

I am assuming the majority of people here don't really have issues with insurance due to age hence it most probably doesnt make sense to you guys to ever even consider an 18i.

I'd be interested to fnid out if they thought the 28i under powered.

I didn't buy mine because it was the fastest or best handling car (which is often how the reviewers judge things) I brought it because it put a big huge grin on my face when I test drove it and it looks pretty cool too....

I noticed what with all the PCP deals BMW were doing on the 20i one way to maintain the GFVs could be by introducing a detuned model in the form of the 18i. Whilst at the same time broaden the market a little bit..

But it's down to whether it ticks your boxes not anyone elses... if only they reviewed on "Does it make girls touch your c*ck?" I think it would do better

Could be a progression of the biz/gt train of thought, where you have a "mere" 200 ponies to boss around and skinny tyres for lower mechanical grip. All the (smallish, granted) power all of the time with none of the worry of over cooking it into the next set of bends. I'm more than happy to do a sonic and tap a digit every now and again, waiting for the car to catch up with me, so we can drive on in a spirited and progressive manner. M'lud.

Wonder if we would go for a boxster 1.8 for 30K?
Bet it would not get bad press It would still be better than the zd in there narrow minds.

Just seen the 2.7 is list basic at around £38K, that was the same value as the 18i in the feature. We know that the 18i is no way near that price, or you can get a 2.7, more like £45K, reason why 13 plates with 3K miles are selling for between 40K and 47K. I think they made a mistake and put the 28i price down.
